Technicolor’s Brian Jentz Explains How New Over-The-Air and Over-The-Top Services Create New HDR Opportunities for Broadcasters

LAS VEGAS – April 24, 2017—NAB 2017—New devices like the Android TV-based AirTV devices that integrate over-the-air and over-the-top content are being well-received by consumers because they overcome some of the limitations with over-the-top content. However, according to Brian Jentz, Senior Director of Product Management with Technicolor’s Connected Home Division, the introduction of the new TV broadcasting standards, ATSC 3.0 will create many more opportunities for over-the-air broadcasters to exploit this integration.

ATSC 3.0 is a major revision of the ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) standards that will support mobile television, 3D television, 4K UHD, high dynamic range (HDR), high frame rate (HFR), and wide color gamut (WCG).

Jentz believes ATSC 3.0 will gain traction very quickly.
“It is targeted to do a couple of things that are really important: improve indoor antenna reception and bring in advanced HDR technologies optimized for higher quality and for efficient delivery of linear content, which is key to what the broadcasters care about,” says Jentz in a podcast interview for journalists.

Until ATSC 3.0 becomes widely available he believes broadcasters will be able to deliver premium HDR content using streaming technologies, thanks to Android TV.

“The industry is coming out with new Android TV set-top boxes that will be based on Android Nougat and SOCs that integrate advanced HDR technologies from Technicolor and Dolby, and Android Nougat includes a new set of APIs that make it easier to deploy and integrate HDR,” he says.

Jentz is particularly excited about the integration of broadband and over-the-air delivered services that ATSC 3.0 will make possible, such as watching your favorite team play an away game while listening to your home team’s announcers.  “I think that is very very powerful,” he says. “Bringing that to ATSC 3.0 with all its other advantages really gives the broadcasters a unique capability.”

Technicolor, he adds, is in a unique position to help broadcasters exploit the potential of ATSC 3.0.

“All our new Android TV set-top boxes have either a single or dual integrated ATSC tuner option and in several of our Android TV product lines, we are offering advanced HDR capability. Today that integration uses the existing ATSC 1.0 standard but we aim to be at the forefront of ATSC 3.0 integration.”

Technicolor’s Alan Stein: Integration of Over-the-Top and Over-the-Air Programming Creates Need for Robust HDR Features in ATSC 3.0 Standards

LAS VEGAS – April 24, 2017—NAB 2017—As Android TV and other OTT offerings converge with OTA broadcasts, it is important to have a robust, comprehensive SDR/HDR delivery solution that can manage the complexity of multiple formats and networking environments, says Alan Stein, Vice President of Technology Development and Standards at Technicolor, in a podcast interview for journalists.

Broadcasters around the globe want to incorporate state-of-the-art systems and capabilities into their next-generation systems and expect the upcoming ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard to play a big part in those efforts. South Korea is adopting ATSC 3.0 as its next-generation broadcast standard and is actively working to have ATSC 3.0 systems, including High Dynamic Range (HDR) capabilities, on the air by the 2018 Winter Olympics, which the country is hosting.
ATSC 3.0 is a suite of broadcast standards for transmitting IP packets over the air. Most of the standards are now in the final stages of completion, and it’s expected that mature and commercial ATSC 3.0-compatible products will be unveiled at NAB 2017.

ATSC 3.0 is internet-compatible in a way that original HD over-the-air transmissions weren’t. Gone are arcane, broadcast-only protocols, and in place are standards leveraging internet protocol delivery. ATSC 3.0 brings IP video over the air. Audio and video are sent in separate streams, so an operator can deliver programming featuring several languages, for instance. And some of those alternate language audio streams could come via a hybrid (over-the-top) path. ATSC 3.0 was designed from the ground up to support broadcast plus broadband, aka hybrid broadcast/broadband TV.

In addition to the targeted broadcasts and HDR capability, there’s also the potential for robust interactive functionality. One remaining challenge will be ensuring that consumers who have TVs that work only with standard dynamic range (SDR) video don’t get left behind as broadcasters migrate to HDR. What’s needed is an approach that can unify the SDR/HDR experience, and Technicolor’s HDR solution does just that.

Silver Spring, Maryland Oct 21, 2021– There is formidable competition challenging the broadcasting community. Over-the-top (OTT) streaming providers have introduced a variety of new user experiences that are forever changing viewing habits and expectations. However, there is room for broadcasters to compete effectively in this field. That is why ideas about improved viewing experiences—such as those brought to the market by Advanced HDR by Technicolor, and interactive functionality have come to the forefront in next-generation television technology.

Supporting all facets of the broadcast ecosystem, the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) develops voluntary standards and recommends practices for digital terrestrial broadcasting. The committee represents broadcast equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computers, cable, satellite, and semiconductor industries.

Since 2000, ATSC’s highest technical honor—the Bernard J. Lechner Outstanding Contributor Award—has been awarded to one outstanding individual for their technical and leadership contributions. At this year’s Next-Gen Broadcast Conference, the 2021 award was presented to Alan Stein, Vice President of Technology at InterDigital.
Next Frontiers of Opportunity for Hybrid Solutions

ATSC is exploring new frontiers of opportunity to introduce hybrid solutions that integrate over-the-air (OTA) broadcasting with OTT services that will enhance how consumers experience content. This has expanded the appeal of ATSC beyond the United States. The standards body receives inquiries from broadcast organizations around the world that have expressed interest in what ATSC 3.0 can do to address specific country requirements.

“For example, there is an effort in India to leverage ATSC 3.0 technologies to offer a ‘broadcast offload’ of mobile video. This is particularly interesting because there are regions in India that lack the cellular infrastructure to support the vast number of people currently watching video on mobile phones,” says Stein.

The glut of video traffic is creating congestion on cellular networks. Technologies included in the ATSC standards could alleviate this pressure by enabling IP video signals transmitted over the air to be received by Indian consumers’ mobile devices, delivering a better viewing experience.

“Today, ATSC 3.0 includes the Scalable HEVC profile known as SHVC–which enables a base signal to be delivered with high robustness to mobile devices while simultaneously sending an enhancement signal with less robustness but high efficiency. This can be used to give HD or 4K enhancement on top of a base quality video service,” explains Stein.

Mainstreaming High Dynamic Range Video

Stein is the chair of the ATSC video specialist group—designated as TG3/S41—in which high dynamic range (HDR) has been a key feature under consideration by broadcasters and consumer electronics manufacturers for several years.

“HDR is now here and well-established. It is available on televisions and in over-the-air hardware. Advanced HDR by Technicolor technology, in particular, has emerged as a unique solution targeting non-HDR and HDR devices with a single transmission. This is important for broadcasters because it is complicated and costly to deliver simulcast services,” says Stein.

Advanced HDR by Technicolor, he explains, enables broadcasters to deliver HDR to HDR devices using a standard dynamic range (SDR) compatible signal with metadata to upconvert the content. It is a strategy that allows a single stream to serve both HDR-capable and legacy devices. It is included in the ATSC 3.0 standard and is the most widely used HDR technology in the U.S. broadcast community.

“As the world continues to get connected and feel smaller, there will be ever-increasing ways for people to collaborate and integrate through technology, which is truly exciting,” says Stein. “That is the focus of our work at ATSC. By: Technicolor   ATLANTA – June 5, 2020 – PRLog—The High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology embedded in the commercial deployment of ATSC 3.0  in Las Vegas by Sinclair Broadcast Group will not only enhance live sports viewing experiences but will also create new business opportunities for the stations adopting the new standard.   ATSC 3.0 incorporated SL-HDR1 (also known as Technicolor HDR) to bridge the gap between HDR and Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) by applying a single-layer distribution solution that supports compatibility with all non-HDR screens. Technicolor HDR has been developed in partnership with Philips and with research and development support from InterDigital Inc.   “This is the first commercial deployment of ATSC 3.0—and Technicolor HDR—in North America,” says Thomas Bohan, Technicolor’s HDR Program President. “With the COVID-19 pandemic, no one knows when people will be able to return to major public venues. The Sinclair announcement opens the door for broadcasters to deliver enhanced live sports coverage, such as the NTT IndyCar Genesys 300 race to be broadcast on the evening of Saturday, June 6. Viewers at home will be able to more easily follow the action—in and out of shadows—a common situation that has challenged broadcasters in the past.”   Technicolor HDR enables Sinclair-owned stations to deliver a signal that can be rendered as SDR as well as HDR. The bitstream is SDR and contains an extra packet that enables HDR reconstruction. Devices that do not support HDR simply ignore the packet, while devices that support Technicolor HDR read the metadata, decode it, and reconstruct HDR video.   “Sinclair is committed to providing its viewers with the best experience possible. Technicolor HDR allows us to do this cost-effectively by providing for backward compatibility in non-HDR displays while offering a vibrant viewing experience for consumers who have invested in new HDR technology,” says Mark Aitken, Senior Vice President of Advanced Technology with Sinclair Broadcast Group.   Commercial Deployment of SL-HDR1 Drives CE Adoption Now that Technicolor HDR is being commercially deployed, the case for including this technology in consumer electronics (CE) devices—such as TVs and mobile phones—has been greatly enhanced.   “This is just the news that CE makers have been waiting for,” says Alan Stein, Vice President of Technology at InterDigital, Inc. “The industry has been in a chicken-or-egg situation for a long time.
