As streaming services compete aggressively for live sports rights, another viewing option is quietly evolving in broadcast television. A growing number of U.S. stations are upgrading their signals with high dynamic range (HDR) technology as part of the ATSC 3.0 “NextGen TV” transition, allowing viewers to watch live sports with enhanced picture quality using free over-the-air broadcasts.

For college basketball fans following the March tournament, the picture quality of a game can be nearly as important as the score. HDR technology expands contrast, brightness, and color range, enabling televisions to display deeper shadows, brighter highlights, and more detailed colors. During live basketball games, these improvements can make elements such as team uniforms, arena lighting, sponsor logos and reflections on the court surface more visible while maintaining image clarity during fast-moving plays like transitions, dunks, and last-second shots.

Sports broadcasts are particularly well suited to HDR because they combine rapid motion with shifting lighting conditions inside arenas. Broadcast engineers say the technology helps maintain visual consistency throughout a game, producing an image that more closely reflects how the human eye perceives the event in person.

The HDR capability is being introduced as part of the broader rollout of NextGen TV, the newest broadcast standard in the United States. The technology allows local television stations to upgrade video quality and audio formats while continuing to deliver programming free over the air.

Many modern televisions — including HD, Full HD, UHD, and 4K models — already support HDR features. Viewers who want to take advantage of HDR broadcasts may need three things: a television with HDR capability, access to a NextGen TV broadcast in their market, and in some cases a compatible tuner or receiver along with an antenna.

In markets where broadcasters have launched NextGen TV signals, some stations are transmitting sports and other programming in HDR formats such as Advanced HDR by Technicolor as part of their upgraded broadcasts.

As the NextGen TV rollout continues across the country, broadcast HDR is becoming another option for viewers who want to watch live sports with improved picture quality. For fans following March college basketball, it also highlights how free over-the-air television continues to evolve alongside streaming services as a way to watch major sporting events at home.

Today, Advanced HDR by Technicolor announced that MyVelo TV has integrated the Advanced HDR by Technicolor solution into its Premiere conversion box based on the latest Amlogic flagship system-on-chip (SoC), with plans to extend support across other product lines in the future.

MyVelo TV’s Premiere conversion box is available for order today and expected to ship in mid-2026 for markets across North America, South America and the Caribbean.

Driven by strong consumer feedback in major test markets, MyVelo TV has made high dynamic range (HDR) a core feature across its NextGen Smart TV products — with a focus on making HDR simple and automatic for consumers.

“MyVelo TV believes consumers shouldn’t have to understand HDR standards to enjoy better picture quality,” said Mark Jensen, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of MyVelo TV. “Different HDR technologies excel in different scenarios — cinematic movies, live sports, or broadcast television. With the addition of Advanced HDR by Technicolor we support all major HDR formats, our Premiere conversion box automatically delivers the best possible picture for each viewer’s TV screen. This approach removes complexity for consumers while fully unlocking the promise of NEXTGEN TV.”

By integrating Advanced HDR by Technicolor alongside other leading HDR formats, MyVelo TV’s Premiere platform is designed to support the technical objectives of NEXTGEN TV deployments and emerging conversion box categories being defined by the industry and broadcasters. This multi-HDR capability positions MyVelo TV as a strong candidate for future mass-market conversion solutions as ATSC 3.0 adoption accelerates nationwide.

Meeting that demand at scale, however, depends on parallel investments by broadcasters as they roll out ATSC 3.0 channels and services nationwide.

“The continued expansion of ATSC 3.0 channels and services is driving a market need for HDR-enabled NEXTGEN TV conversion boxes and TVs,” said Matthew Goldman, vice president of strategic and technical initiatives for Sinclair, Inc, which implements Advanced HDR by Technicolor in over 150 ATSC 3.0 channels across the US, as well as on Sinclair’s digital channels. “The enhanced picture improvements delivered by HDR provide an exciting technological development for both broadcasters and viewers. That is why Sinclair has deployed more HDR channels than all other US broadcasters combined. The partnership between Advanced HDR by Technicolor and MyVelo TV is a proof point that the ecosystem is coalescing to ensure that consumers can enjoy NEXTGEN TV content in HDR.”

That market momentum is reinforced by how quickly viewers recognize the value of HDR once it is delivered consistently and without friction, particularly in high-impact programming such as live sports.

“When people see HDR content, they immediately notice the difference — especially when enjoying sports and other live events,” said Rick Dumont, head of business development for Advanced HDR by Technicolor. “As the industry evolves from standard dynamic range (SDR) technology to HDR, it is important to remember that broadcasters, distributors, and consumers are all at different points in the upgrade cycle. The Advanced HDR by Technicolor solution addresses this challenge during the transition to NEXTGEN TV (ATSC 3.0) by embedding HDR metadata into the SDR signal. Broadcasters can efficiently send one transmission, and consumers’ devices interpret that signal as either SDR or HDR depending on their capabilities. This creates a migration path that leaves no one behind as the industry evolves with NEXTGEN TV.”

###

About Advanced HDR by Technicolor

Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a suite of high-dynamic-range (HDR) technologies designed to deliver superior video quality across a variety of display devices and network environments. Developed as a collaboration between InterDigital and Philips, it includes formats like SL-HDR1, SL-HDR2, and SL-HDR3, which dynamically optimize and convert HDR content to match the capabilities of the display device in real-time. This allows broadcasters and content providers to deliver a high-quality viewing experience with improved contrast, brightness, and color accuracy while maximizing bandwidth efficiency. With support for multiple distribution workflows, Advanced HDR by Technicolor enables seamless integration into existing infrastructures, making it a preferred solution for broadcasters seeking to future-proof their HDR delivery. To enjoy free over-the-air (OTA) content in HDR, consumers will need a NEXTGEN TV or a NEXTGEN TV receiver connected to a HDR-enabled TV. The Advanced HDR by Technicolor solution combines SDR and HDR in a single signal, so consumers will always have the best possible video experience without needing to worry about having the right TV at home. Our partnership with BitRouter makes it easier for consumers to enjoy HDR content and is an integral part of ensuring the successful rollout of NEXTGEN TV across markets in the US.”

###

About Advanced HDR by Technicolor

Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a suite of high-dynamic-range (HDR) technologies designed to deliver superior video quality across a variety of display devices and network environments. As the ecosystem makes the shift to ATSC 3.0, HDR capabilities continue to grow.”

“ATSC 3.0 services continue to expand across America, generating the need for HDR-enabled conversion boxes and displays,” said Matthew Goldman, vice president of strategic and technical initiatives for Sinclair, Inc, which implements Advanced HDR by Technicolor in over 150 ATSC 3.0 channels across the US, as well as on Sinclair’s digital channels. “HDR offers an exciting picture improvement to television services, and Sinclair has deployed more HDR channels than every other broadcaster combined. This partnership between Zinwell and Advanced HDR by Technicolor is an important step for building an ecosystem where consumers can enjoy NEXTGEN TV content in HDR.”

Through the seamless collaborations with the technical teams of Amlogic and Advanced HDR by Technicolor, Zinwell has completed integration of Advanced HDR by Technicolor in Zinwell NEXTGEN TV Box and will launch in the American market soon.

###

About Advanced HDR by Technicolor

Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a suite of high-dynamic-range (HDR) technologies designed to deliver superior video quality across a variety of display devices and network environments.
In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, Advanced HDR by Technicolor announced that seven public TV stations have deployed ATSC 3.0 and are enabled with Advanced HDR by Technicolor, marking a major milestone for accessible, free, over-the-air (OTA) public TV. Maryland Public Television (MPT) in Baltimore, Maryland; WPTD in Dayton, Ohio; WXXI in Rochester, New York; PBS Reno in Reno, Nevada; Nebraska Public Media in Omaha, Nebraska; Nashville PBS in Nashville, Tennessee; and KBTC in Tacoma, Washington are now delivering content in Advanced HDR by Technicolor.

This is a significant development for public TV stations, which were initially excluded from channel sharing agreements formed by commercial stations in major markets at the start of the ATSC 3.0 rollout. As the deployment of ATSC 3.0 with Advanced HDR by Technicolor grew, numerous commercial broadcasters as well as public TV stations have begun implementation. There are now over 150 ATSC 3.0 channels/services broadcasting in Advanced HDR by Technicolor each day and every hour.

“The backward compatibility of Advanced HDR by Technicolor makes it possible for public broadcasters to improve picture quality without creating barriers to ensure equitable services,” said Ling Ling Sun, vice president of technology for Maryland Public Television. “The Advanced HDR by Technicolor solution is in complete alignment with the mission of public TV. From an operational standpoint, Advanced HDR by Technicolor does not require meaningfully more bandwidth or parallel transmissions. The technology enables Maryland Public Television to enhance over-the-air television, reengage our audience and reinforce the relevance of this free, universally accessible public media.”

Public TV stations are currently moving rapidly through a technological transformation. Nebraska Public Media launched the nation’s first Broadcast Enabled Streaming TV (BEST) channel, which is a Full HD (1080p) hybrid OTA & broadband transmission with Advanced HDR by Technicolor that consumers can find on connected TVs as a broadcast virtual channel or access on the internet. Nebraska Public Media also deployed a customized RUN3TV-based Broadcaster Application, on its BEST channel, which integrates linear programming, on-demand content and interactive services within a single IP native interface. Maryland Public Television is currently in the process of acquiring a license for the RUN3TV app.

“The Advanced HDR by Technicolor solution is a perfect match for public media. Through the single stream transmission of Advanced HDR by Technicolor, consumers with HDR-enabled TVs, HDR-enabled receivers or conversion boxes can enjoy public media content with the rich contrast and vibrant colors that high dynamic range capabilities deliver. Consumers with standard dynamic range (SDR) TVs receive high quality in SDR without disruption while accessing exactly the same transmission,” said Rick Dumont, head of business development for Advanced HDR by Technicolor.

The deployment of ATSC 3.0 with Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a critical infrastructure upgrade for public media, enabling public TV stations to deliver a hybrid OTA and over-the-top service.

“The Advanced HDR by Technicolor solution allows public broadcasters to continue meeting viewers where they are while sustaining free television in HDR over the long-term. It is clear that public TV stations are innovating quickly and shaping the future of TV,” Dumont concludes.

###

About Advanced HDR by Technicolor

Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a suite of high-dynamic-range (HDR) technologies designed to deliver superior video quality across a variety of display devices and network environments.
As TV technology continues to evolve, emerging technologies and new innovations have introduced exciting new ways to elevate your viewing experience—especially when it comes to live sports.

Among the most impressive developments available to fans across the country is High Dynamic Range (HDR), a technology that enhances picture quality to bring out the best in every scene. For outdoor sports fans, this translates into access to a more vivid, lifelike experience from the comfort of home. This is because, with HDR, you’re not just watching the game — whether it is football, baseball, golf or tennis — you’re transported right into the action.

Why Choose HDR for Live Sports on TV or Mobile Devices?

HDR technologies — including Advanced HDR by Technicolor — enhance your viewing experience by improving contrast, brightness, and color depth, making the picture on your screen look more lifelike. With advanced HDR technology, this experience is taken to a whole new level. Even in tricky lighting conditions, like sunset games or patchy overcast weather, HDR ensures you don’t miss a single detail by adjusting the images you see to fit the environment, giving you the best possible picture without losing clarity.

This is especially important during outdoor sports, where lighting changes over the course of the day. HDR ensures that bright sunlight or deep shadows never obscure the action. It is a breakthrough in live sports broadcasting that delivers unmatched quality regardless of the sun on the field, the shade cast by clouds or structures, or the glare of stadium lights at night.

How to Access Live Sports in HDR

The good news is that HDR is now widely available. After years of waiting, many sports broadcasters and streaming platforms now support HDR content. This technology has been integrated into the production of live sports programming.

Major streaming services offer HDR support for live sports, and more are adding this enhanced visual technology every day. With the rise of NextGen TV, many broadcasters now offer live sports in HDR, ensuring you’ll experience those events in stunning detail, with richer colors and superior brightness.

In addition, there is a rapidly growing array of devices that are now available to help you experience sports in HDR, including the new generations of TVs, set-top boxes, and streaming devices. You can enjoy enhanced live sporting experiences if your device supports HDR. Simply look for the HDR logo when shopping for a new TV or device to ensure compatibility.

Leveling Up Your Sports Viewing

As more broadcasters and streaming platforms adopt HDR, this technology will become even more essential for sports fans. From baseball to soccer leagues around the world, you can expect HDR to become the norm for live sports broadcasts.

By upgrading your devices and ensuring they support HDR, you’re setting yourself up to enjoy the best sports viewing experiences—now and in the future.

Advanced HDR by Technicolor

For the ultimate HDR experience, Advanced HDR by Technicolor is the top choice for sports viewing. It brings out the finest details in every outdoor scene, delivering unmatched brightness, contrast, and color accuracy.

Whether it’s a sun-drenched field or a stadium under the lights, Advanced HDR by Technicolor ensures that every moment feels as vivid and lifelike as being there in person. Don’t miss out—make the upgrade and experience the best in sports viewing today!

July 18, 2021—For mass adoption of high dynamic range (HDR) to take place, all key stakeholders across the ecosystem — consumer electronics, content creation, production and broadcasting — will have to be aligned and in sync to deliver the rich experiences today’s consumers are demanding. Among the most critical players in this value chain are the system-on-chip (SoC) manufacturers. This community provides the underlying components upon which rich, immersive experiences can be delivered to consumer devices as the industry makes the transition from a current installed base of standard dynamic range (SDR) to a future that is dominated by HDR.

“HDR has become an essential feature for TV manufacturers today that want to bring impactful innovations to consumers and households around the world. That is why the top-performing — and often the most expensive — TVs today are HDR TVs,” says Alfred Chan, vice president of TV BU, Smart Home Business Group at MediaTek. MediaTek currently sells TV SoCs to 95% of all retail TV brands — those sold at stores like Best Buy and Costco, as well as major retailers all around the world.

“It has been encouraging to see how the rest of the industry is rising to the challenge of making HDR content available for these next-generation TV sets. Broadcasters — like Sinclair Broadcast Group in the United States — are bringing over-the-air content, especially live sports, to consumers in HDR. MediaTek is committed to ensuring that HDR is presented correctly on TV sets that support this immersive viewing experience,” he says.

HDR Momentum Is Building in the Broadcast Community

The past year and a half has seen a tremendous amount of progress take place as broadcasters seeking to compete more effectively with streaming providers embraced — and deployed — the ATSC 3.0 standards that support HDR. In fact, in April of 2021, the first affiliate NBC station to broadcast in HDR — a Sinclair Broadcast Group affiliate in Las Vegas — went live. Based on its success, Sinclair has already expanded HDR broadcasts to 28 stations across the U.S., with plans to double the number of HDR-capable stations by the end of 2022.

“They are moving forward in response to consumer demand,” says Tony Bozzini, head of business development for Advanced HDR by Technicolor, a suite of HDR production, distribution and display solutions that is supported in the ATSC 3.0 standard. The solutions leverage machine learning (ML) technology to maximize image quality and enhance the HDR consumer viewing experience. A collaboration between Philips, InterDigital and Technicolor, Advanced HDR by Technicolor is composed of two key elements:

The Intelligent Tone Management (ITM) tool, which provides a dynamic, tunable, real-time solution to up-convert SDR content to HDR with full freedom and flexibility to manage contrast, brightness and color saturation, and

Single-layer HDR (SL-HDR), a dynamic and tunable real-time tool that implements the ETSI SL-HDR standards to generate and deliver a single, consistent, high-quality broadcast stream. SL-HDR1 transforms HDR input streams into SDR-plus-metadata streams.

“Consumers who buy new TV sets that contain the embedded technologies provided by companies like MediaTek are very much aware of the elevated viewing experience offered by HDR. They get frustrated when they don’t have the content to support this experience. Thanks to the work of broadcasters like Sinclair, the demand for HDR content is beginning to be met,” explains Bozzini.

On the other hand, broadcasters must still meet the needs of the large installed base of TVs that only support SDR. The backward compatibility features of Advanced HDR by Technicolor make it possible for consumers who do not have HDR devices to enjoy the highest-quality SDR experience.

“Sinclair is one of the most active and assertive players to bring Advanced HDR by Technicolor to market. By embracing Advanced HDR by Technicolor, Sinclair is implementing a strategy across the country that provides a path to an HDR future while supporting the current embedded presence of SDR-only capable TVs that are still in the market,” says Bozzini.

HDR and Live Sporting Events Are a Match Made in Heaven

Live outdoor sporting events — an area that still is mostly dominated by the broadcast community — represent an excellent opportunity for HDR application.

“Sinclair recently announced that Bally Sports Network and the Tennis Channel will be broadcast live in Advanced HDR by Technicolor,” says Bozzini.

There are practical reasons for this decision. One of the most frustrating aspects of broadcasting live outdoor events is that lighting shifts over the course of the day, casting shadows that create challenges for conventional SDR technology to clearly capture the action on the field.

Adaptive solutions embedded in Advanced HDR by Technicolor optimize images in real time. It automatically adjusts and corrects large shifts in lighting over the course of outdoor broadcasts. The adaptive features also remove limitations imposed by static converters that restrict the creative options available to video engineers.

Sinclair has incorporated Advanced HDR by Technicolor into production-truck equipment offered by companies like Cobalt Digital, which leverages ML to automatically sense light quality changes to then deliver a single seamless and consistent stream of SDR and HDR images.

“We expect these types of consumer viewing experiences to drive sales of HDR TVs,” says Bozzini.

MediaTek’s Chan concurs.

“It is an exciting time because SoC manufacturers are in a critical position to bridge the gap between broadcasters and device manufacturers in ensuring that viewers receive the experience intended by the production teams,” says Chan.

“MediaTek is working to ensure that the Advanced HDR by Technicolor solution is properly incorporated into our chipsets so that images are properly displayed on TVs. This requires a huge amount of coordination. The good news is that the ecosystem is working very closely together, and these efforts are paying off. We are bringing HDR to market at an increasingly rapid pace.”

Click to read the full Q&A

July 15, 2021—Halted production of new content, along with a dramatic increase of consumer demand for video entertainment throughout the COVID-19 crisis, has placed unprecedented demands on the content libraries of broadcasters and streaming providers. As content owners mine their inventory of episodic series and movies produced decades ago, they are exploring how to up-convert content to meet the elevated viewing standards of today’s consumers. So say Ernie Sanchez, co-founder of Cinnafilm, and Tony Bozzini, head of business development for Advanced HDR by Technicolor, in a recent joint interview for journalists.

The problem with legacy content, however, is that it was produced to address the aesthetic demands of the 1990s and 2000s based on the technological limitations—2K high definition (HD) and standard dynamic range (SDR)—of the era. These production values not only fall far short of the visual experiences that audiences expect today, but also are susceptible to unanticipated distortions as they are played on modern TVs and devices if they are not properly converted and managed.

Consequently demand for solutions that enhance video and image processing is creating new opportunities for Advanced HDR by Technicolor and Cinnafilm—a solution provider for post production houses and broadcasters that offers file-based image processing technology services that optimizes television and classic films for modern delivery requirements.

Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a suite of HDR production, distribution and display solutions that leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) to maximize the image quality of any SDR or HDR format. Advanced HDR by Technicolor was designed to protect—and enhance— investments in legacy infrastructure and devices made by industry and consumers.

“The major disruption of content production during the pandemic has created an opportunity to re-introduce—and monetize— decades-old TV shows and movies to a new generation of viewers,” says Ernie Sanchez, co-founder of Cinnafilm.

As 2021 continues to unfold, there are strong indications that the market will see increased re-deployment of legacy content. The reason is simple: it is available and ready to go.

“That is why Advanced HDR by Technicolor and Cinnafilm are collaborating to address the need for simple and scalable solutions that enable content owners to upgrade content libraries from SDR to HDR in a cost effective manner,” says Tony Bozzini, head of business development for Advanced HDR by Technicolor.

Challenges to Upgrading Content to HDR

Upgrading and reformatting legacy content to HDR does present some challenges within the industry. It also has rekindled an ongoing industry debate around what it means to update content for a new generation of viewers.

“There are two very strong camps in this content community today,” explains Sanchez. “One side feels strongly against altering assets and firmly believes content should be broadcast the same way it was filmed. This is a purist approach that advocates for the original intent and is interested in avoiding any alterations to images as they were conceived when originally produced.”

From a practical perspective, however, this method places content providers at the mercy of the broadcast pipeline. For instance, if assets remain SDR and high definition (HD) in a world that has embraced HDR and UHD viewing environments, there’s no way to predict how the consumer will set up their home televisions. It raises critical questions.

“Is the content going to fit to screen? Will a consumer’s TV settings crop out some of the image? It’s an important reminder for purist situations, consumer devices may go ahead and alter the look and feel of the show in a myriad of ways,” says Sanchez

Beyond creative concerns, the size and scope of legacy content libraries introduces concerns surrounding the labor and costs associated with HDR conversion and distribution.

Cinnafilm and Advanced HDR by Technicolor have collaborated to integrate their capabilities into the PixelStrings Software-as-a-Service platform. This enables content owners to convert massive legacy content libraries to HDR in a rapid and cost-effective manner.

“After creatives develop and convert content, they have to address the fact that there are many distribution channels available in different markets throughout the world. These distribution channels vary in capability for content delivery,” says Bozzini.

As a result, creatives need the ability to offer content in multiple flavors—whether it is HD or UHD and SDR or HDR—to match the capabilities of a particular distribution channel and generate revenue.

“Advanced HDR by Technicolor enables engineers to distribute content in both SDR and HDR within a single stream. It leverages the metadata to determine whether a consumer device is capable of supporting SDR or HDR. That is a point of differentiation in a highly competitive marketplace.”
