MEDIA ADVISORY— Captain America: Civil War Shows Visually-Stunning HDR in Action

LOS ANGELES – May 12, 2016—Technicolor was a prominent member of Marvel’s team for their latest blockbuster release: Captain America: Civil War. Led by senior supervising finishing colorist Steve Scott, Technicolor provided final color-grading as well as mastering for a wide array of HDR theatrical deliverables and HDR home masters.

Technicolor creative talent is leading the industry in HDR presentations for many of the industry’s most prominent theatrical features, having finished the HDR versions of The Revenant, The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, and the upcoming Steven Spielberg directed BFG. Captain America: Civil War enjoyed the 5th largest theatrical opening in US box office history.

Captain America: Civil War, along with the other cited major recent releases in which Technicolor has been involved reflect a new de facto standard for theatrical distribution, according to Scott. As HDR exhibition and projection becomes an integral part of the movie-making process, Technicolor talent and color scientists are engaging with projects earlier in the production and planning process.

“It gets more and more refined every time out for the simple reason there is less time to deliver … but we face the same level of expectation for our quality and performance. So we continue to innovate solutions and processes that allow us to work in the most efficient manner possible, while not sacrificing any artistry or creative intent in the process,” says Scott.

In addition to HDR color-grading, Technicolor also delivered 500 VFX shots for the movie. Technicolor’s in-house VFX team was led by producers Doug Spilatro and Tricia Pifer.
