Today, Advanced HDR by Technicolor announced that MyVelo TV has integrated the Advanced HDR by Technicolor solution into its Premiere conversion box based on the latest Amlogic flagship system-on-chip (SoC), with plans to extend support across other product lines in the future.

MyVelo TV’s Premiere conversion box is available for order today and expected to ship in mid-2026 for markets across North America, South America and the Caribbean.

Driven by strong consumer feedback in major test markets, MyVelo TV has made high dynamic range (HDR) a core feature across its NextGen Smart TV products — with a focus on making HDR simple and automatic for consumers.

“MyVelo TV believes consumers shouldn’t have to understand HDR standards to enjoy better picture quality,” said Mark Jensen, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of MyVelo TV. “Different HDR technologies excel in different scenarios — cinematic movies, live sports, or broadcast television. With the addition of Advanced HDR by Technicolor we support all major HDR formats, our Premiere conversion box automatically delivers the best possible picture for each viewer’s TV screen. This approach removes complexity for consumers while fully unlocking the promise of NEXTGEN TV.”

By integrating Advanced HDR by Technicolor alongside other leading HDR formats, MyVelo TV’s Premiere platform is designed to support the technical objectives of NEXTGEN TV deployments and emerging conversion box categories being defined by the industry and broadcasters. This multi-HDR capability positions MyVelo TV as a strong candidate for future mass-market conversion solutions as ATSC 3.0 adoption accelerates nationwide.

Meeting that demand at scale, however, depends on parallel investments by broadcasters as they roll out ATSC 3.0 channels and services nationwide.

“The continued expansion of ATSC 3.0 channels and services is driving a market need for HDR-enabled NEXTGEN TV conversion boxes and TVs,” said Matthew Goldman, vice president of strategic and technical initiatives for Sinclair, Inc, which implements Advanced HDR by Technicolor in over 150 ATSC 3.0 channels across the US, as well as on Sinclair’s digital channels. “The enhanced picture improvements delivered by HDR provide an exciting technological development for both broadcasters and viewers. That is why Sinclair has deployed more HDR channels than all other US broadcasters combined. The partnership between Advanced HDR by Technicolor and MyVelo TV is a proof point that the ecosystem is coalescing to ensure that consumers can enjoy NEXTGEN TV content in HDR.”

That market momentum is reinforced by how quickly viewers recognize the value of HDR once it is delivered consistently and without friction, particularly in high-impact programming such as live sports.

“When people see HDR content, they immediately notice the difference — especially when enjoying sports and other live events,” said Rick Dumont, head of business development for Advanced HDR by Technicolor. “As the industry evolves from standard dynamic range (SDR) technology to HDR, it is important to remember that broadcasters, distributors, and consumers are all at different points in the upgrade cycle. The Advanced HDR by Technicolor solution addresses this challenge during the transition to NEXTGEN TV (ATSC 3.0) by embedding HDR metadata into the SDR signal. Broadcasters can efficiently send one transmission, and consumers’ devices interpret that signal as either SDR or HDR depending on their capabilities. This creates a migration path that leaves no one behind as the industry evolves with NEXTGEN TV.”

###

About Advanced HDR by Technicolor

Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a suite of high-dynamic-range (HDR) technologies designed to deliver superior video quality across a variety of display devices and network environments. Developed as a collaboration between InterDigital and Philips, it includes formats like SL-HDR1, SL-HDR2, and SL-HDR3, which dynamically optimize and convert HDR content to match the capabilities of the display device in real-time. “Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a technology solution that consists of Technicolor HDR (SL-HDR1) and Technicolor Intelligent Tone Management (ITM). Technicolor HDR takes in any SDR or HDR format and distributes it to any device and appropriately presents the correct image for SDR-capable devices or HDR-capable devices. Technicolor ITM offers the ability to up-convert SDR content to HDR-capable devices during the distribution process,” he says.

SL-HDR1 is a unique solution in that it takes HDR video and converts it into a format that can be viewed on legacy HD televisions. However, the content can be converted back to HDR for newer devices, so that one can address both the legacy market and the new television market within a single stream. SL-HDR1 can convert HDR to SDR – a process known as tone mapping.

“This is very interesting for broadcasters who are starting to do live productions in HDR but deliver on their legacy networks in SDR. It is critically important for broadcasters because they want to send one stream (not simulcast.) While over-the-top (OTT) providers can easily send multiple streams to consumers (SDR to SDR devices and HDR to HDR devices), broadcasters and—to some extent—cable providers, would be burdened quite significantly if they had to simulcast multiple streams,” Stein says.

Technicolor has successfully tested this capability several times over the past two years. Most recently, at the end of July, Technicolor worked with Spectrum SportsNet in Los Angeles to broadcast two Los Angeles Dodgers – San Francisco Giants games, using SL-HDR1’s tone mapping to convert the HDR production to SDR for nationwide distribution.

Looking ahead, Stein says U.S. broadcasters plan to have large-scale trials in 2017 and early 2018 with commercial services possible later in 2018 and early 2019.

“The decision to add Technicolor HDR into the ATSC 3.0 toolkit encourages the technology’s implementation into the next generation of television sets and other consumer electronics products,” concludes Stein.

LAS VEGAS – April 24, 2017—NAB 2017—New devices like the Android TV-based AirTV devices that integrate over-the-air and over-the-top content are being well-received by consumers because they overcome some of the limitations with over-the-top content. However, according to Brian Jentz, Senior Director of Product Management with Technicolor’s Connected Home Division, the introduction of the new TV broadcasting standards, ATSC 3.0 will create many more opportunities for over-the-air broadcasters to exploit this integration.

ATSC 3.0 is a major revision of the ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) standards that will support mobile television, 3D television, 4K UHD, high dynamic range (HDR), high frame rate (HFR), and wide color gamut (WCG).

Jentz believes ATSC 3.0 will gain traction very quickly.

Until ATSC 3.0 becomes widely available he believes broadcasters will be able to deliver premium HDR content using streaming technologies, thanks to Android TV.

“The industry is coming out with new Android TV set-top boxes that will be based on Android Nougat and SOCs that integrate advanced HDR technologies from Technicolor and Dolby, and Android Nougat includes a new set of APIs that make it easier to deploy and integrate HDR,” he says.

Jentz is particularly excited about the integration of broadband and over-the-air delivered services that ATSC 3.0 will make possible, such as watching your favorite team play an away game while listening to your home team’s announcers. “I think that is very very powerful,” he says. “Bringing that to ATSC 3.0 with all its other advantages really gives the broadcasters a unique capability.”

Technicolor, he adds, is in a unique position to help broadcasters exploit the potential of ATSC 3.0.

“All our new Android TV set-top boxes have either a single or dual integrated ATSC tuner option and in several of our Android TV product lines, we are offering advanced HDR capability. Today that integration uses the existing ATSC 1.0 standard but we aim to be at the forefront of ATSC 3.0 integration.”

Broadcasters around the globe want to incorporate state-of-the-art systems and capabilities into their next-generation systems and expect the upcoming ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard to play a big part in those efforts. ATSC 3.0 is a suite of broadcast standards for transmitting IP packets over the air. Most of the standards are now in the final stages of completion, and it’s expected that mature and commercial ATSC 3.0-compatible products will be unveiled at NAB 2017.

ATSC 3.0 is internet-compatible in a way that original HD over-the-air transmissions weren’t. Gone are arcane, broadcast-only protocols, and in place are standards leveraging internet protocol delivery. ATSC 3.0 brings IP video over the air. Audio and video are sent in separate streams, so an operator can deliver programming featuring several languages, for instance. And some of those alternate language audio streams could come via a hybrid (over-the-top) path. ATSC 3.0 was designed from the ground up to support broadcast plus broadband, aka hybrid broadcast/broadband TV.

In addition to the targeted broadcasts and HDR capability, there’s also the potential for robust interactive functionality. One remaining challenge will be ensuring that consumers who have TVs that work only with standard dynamic range (SDR) video don’t get left behind as broadcasters migrate to HDR. What’s needed is an approach that can unify the SDR/HDR experience, and Technicolor’s HDR solution does just that.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – March 29, 2017—High dynamic range (HDR) video promises a much-improved live sports viewing experience that can be offered by broadcasters. However, doing so does present some technical challenges that need to be addressed, explains Kirk Barker, Senior Vice President of Emerging Products with Technicolor in a podcast interview for journalists.

Technicolor recently worked with Spectrum SportsNet to broadcast a Lakers game from Los Angeles in both standard dynamic range (SDR) and HDR. While Technicolor supplied the SDR to HDR conversion units for use in the broadcast trucks, Barker points out that a great deal of the value is delivered by technology that is embedded into TVs, set-top boxes, and other devices that need to handle content in both SDR and the multiple versions of HDR to ensure an optimal viewing experience.

“We believe the solution implemented in the end device, the TV or the set-top box, has to be able to accept a variety of different formats and that will be one of the selling points of Advanced HDR by Technicolor,” Barker says.

Two of the big challenges Barker sees are: ensuring that all the different formats are displayed at their correct light level—or luminance—and that the technology is sufficiently future-proof to handle developments down the track.

“The system must be able to translate between different electro-optical transfer functions. It must be able to convert SDR up to HDR and convert HDR down to different luminance. And the set-top box has to be aware of the graphics, like the overlays for the scores. All that has to be managed to a consistent luminance. The solutions we are developing with our set-top box partners have all of those components.”

“Technicolor,” he says, “is future-proofing its universal HDR distribution technology.”

“Any system must be able to adapt and transition. With our system you could start today with HLG, transition to HDR10 in the future, and then maybe beyond HDR10 to HDR10 with enhancements,” he explains.

Jentz explains that Advanced HDR from Technicolor offers the market a big improvement on the basic HDR technology that is already in the market.

“Advanced HDR enables a consumer to playback any HDR content on existing Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) TVs, or, if they have a new HDR TV, they can take full advantage of the content. This is done by sending one single content stream that includes standard dynamic range data plus HDR, through the use of metadata,” he explains.

This is a big advantage over the more basic HDR technologies that have started to roll out this year. The other advantage Advanced HDR technology brings is tone management, which creates the ability to up-convert SDR to HDR in the home, on a set-top box. In so doing, viewers have uninterrupted HDR capability displayed on their TVs.

However, Advanced HDR requires additional hardware in set-top boxes, and to enable these to be produced cost-effectively in large volumes, the necessary hardware functions will have to be embedded in silicon. Technicolor is working closely with system-on-a-chip (SoC) makers to help them develop SoC products able to process advanced HDR video. At IBC in Amsterdam Technicolor demonstrated the results of its collaboration with one SoC manufacturer, MStar.

“We worked with MStar early on to integrate our intellectual property into their silicon,” Jentz says. “We worked closely with them in their labs to make sure the video quality was high and up to expectations. And throughout this year we have worked closely with service providers in real-world environments to test out the end-to-end ecosystem. Now we have set-top boxes available that integrate SoCs like MStar’s that we will be rolling out for live testing.”

He expects demand for these set-top boxes to be high. “HDR is one of those technologies where people understand the benefits as soon as they see it. Service providers are no different. As soon as they see HDR they appreciate the benefits and want to bring it to their customers.”

PARIS – Jan. 5, 2016 – PRLog —Technicolor (Euronext Paris: TCH, OTCQX- TCLRY) announced at the CES 2016 conference being held this week in Las Vegas a series of initiatives that accelerate the broad availability of high dynamic range (HDR) and other next-generation entertainment experiences. Technicolor’s presence in the show illustrates the importance of harnessing open innovation and industry-wide collaboration to bring the most exciting and immersive experiences to market while protecting existing investments consumers have made in devices and customer premises equipment.

Technicolor unveiled a strategic initiative with LG Electronics to collaborate on delivering new content experiences to the home that meet the new UHD Alliance content and display specifications and push the boundaries of video imaging. Early elements of the expanded Technicolor-LG collaboration are on display for the first time this week at CES® 2016. The two companies will screen never-before-seen HDR-graded content from iconic and multi-Oscar award-winning writer/director/producer Francis Ford Coppola.

Technicolor also announced an agreement with Royal Philips to merge their ongoing delivery roadmaps for HDR solutions, including content creation tools, encoding, and decoding software, and implementation support. As a result of this collaboration, Technicolor and Philips will offer a unique, best-in-class proposition to the market that allows HDR delivery, with full backward compatibility to Standard Dynamic Range displays. This will simplify HDR deployments for distributors who will be able to send one signal to all of their customers, regardless of which TV they have. Their networks will be future-proof as consumers upgrade to HDR displays over the next few years.

Technicolor revealed that leading TV and Set-Top Box (STB) System-on-Chip (SoC) manufacturers are integrating Technicolor’s HDR Decoder technology into their offerings. The SoC companies include: Marvell, MSTAR, Sigma and STMicroelectronics. The adoption of Technicolor’s technology by SoC makers, who represent the lion’s share of the market, paves the way for consumer electronics manufacturers to integrate Technicolor’s suite of HDR enhancement technologies into their 2016 devices. It will allow consumers to access the wave of next-generation content that will become available starting this year.

Technicolor also announced the availability of the “Technicolor HDR Intelligent Tone Management (ITM)” solution for silicon. Consumer equipment (CE) devices that feature SoCs containing “Technicolor HDR ITM” capabilities will be able to automatically up-convert all legacy SDR content to powerful High Dynamic Range images on their new HDR devices. Technicolor HDR ITM unlocks millions of hours of movies, TV shows, video games, home videos and photos by adding contrast, wide color palette, realistic highlights and deep shadow details of native HDR content. The solution is based on the Technicolor Hollywood production technology that was honored with the 2015 Lumière Award from the Advanced Imaging Society for “outstanding technologies that advance the entertainment industry.”

Beyond these major news announcements, Technicolor’s CES 2016 show floor presence — Las Vegas Convention Center Booth #8632, Tech East, Central Hall — offers attendees a window into how Technicolor is advancing the experiences that have ushered in a new era of awe in the media and entertainment sector. Visitors will have an opportunity to learn how:

Makers of major motion pictures like Spectre, Iron Man, Gravity, Birdman, The Revenant, and Disney’s upcoming film The Jungle Book count on collaboration with Technicolor colorists, sound mixers, visual effects (VFX) artists, animators, and others to tell amazing stories.

Technicolor is developing and producing immersive content across industries — for applications in Advertising, Feature films, Gaming, and Architectural Visualization — to create original and unique VR/AR experiences that are transforming storytelling, next-generation entertainment, and digital life experiences.

Owners of archived content work with Technicolor scientists and engineers to breathe new life into libraries of existing stories to meet the expectations of an increasingly demanding and discerning global audience of consumers.

Technologies like 4K UHD, high dynamic range, wide color gamut, and high frame rates are being developed by Technicolor to create opportunities for artists to connect with audiences in new and exciting ways.

Technicolor is working on every platform – including smartphones, tablets, laptops, PCs, and TVs – to bring consumers an optimum and enhanced experience at home and on the go.

New innovations in “home gateway” and “set-top box” technologies from Technicolor integrate connected home and digital life environments in an intuitive manner.

Technicolor is creating the ultimate future-proofed storage format by harnessing the power and efficiency of deoxyribonucleic acid – better known as DNA.

###

The integrated solution from Cobalt and Technicolor addresses the needs of production truck operators working with a mix of SDR and HDR systems by allowing them to create HDR signals easily from existing SDR sources, such as cameras and graphics systems. Technicolor’s ITM SDR-to-HDR process manages brighter highlights and darker shadows to deliver more realistic images for the most compelling and immersive entertainment experiences. In addition to supporting live broadcasts, this real-time analysis and adjustment capability offers broadcasters an immediate opportunity to unlock the millions of hours of existing SDR content and release it into an HDR world.

Another advantage of using Technicolor’s technology is its ability to tone-map HDR signals into SDR signals while creating SL-HDR1 metadata that is then inserted into the SDR signal for use downstream. This capability means a network service provider only needs to transmit an SDR feed to the viewer, and if the viewer has compatible equipment (TV or set-top box), the system will automatically “rehydrate” the signal to deliver a full HDR experience. This process is called Technicolor HDR, and the technology will reside in the Cobalt 9904-UDX-4K by the end of the third quarter. At that point, the 9904-UDX-4K will be the only baseband processor needed to create HDR and deliver it over existing SDR-capable networks.
Cobalt Digital is the first U.S. manufacturer selected to license Technicolor’s HDR ITM technology for the broadcast television environment, and the technology is available as an option for Cobalt’s new series of 12G-SDI 4K cards for the openGear® platform.

“Baseball is the true American pastime, and Cobalt is proud to play a key role in bringing this immersive viewing experience to DIRECTV customers and baseball fans who can’t make it to the game in person,” said Cobalt Digital CEO Bob McAlpine.
