There are two major components to Advanced HDR by Technicolor: 1) The Intelligent Tone Management (ITM) tool provides a dynamic, tunable, real-time solution to up-convert SDR content to HDR with full freedom and flexibility to manage contrast, brightness and color saturation; and 2) The Single Layer HDR (SL-HDR) is a dynamic and tunable real-time tool that implements the ETSI SL-HDR standards to generate and deliver a single, consistent, high-quality broadcast stream starting from any mix of input content (such as live, movies, news) across a wide range of HDR formats (HDR10, HLG, S-LOG3). SL-HDR1 transforms HDR input streams into SDR-plus-metadata streams. SL-HDR compatible receivers provide consumers with high-quality HDR images that can be adapted to optimize the display capabilities of their devices. Thanks to the unique backward compatibility feature of SL-HDR1, consumers who do not have HDR devices can enjoy the highest quality SDR experience.
“Even during trial stages, service providers are looking for ways to integrate HDR into emerging deployments of set-top boxes and other customer premises equipment (CPE),” said Arthuis.

As a result, while interest in HDR has not yet taken European markets by storm, momentum is rapidly building. This is being driven by better coordination among key players in different parts of the industry, according to InterDigital’s Allie.

“What HDR has needed most is better alignment across the full ecosystem – which includes device manufacturers, distributors and content owners. Each of these groups are now seeing the new market opportunities — and requirements — for acquiring and implementing the proper tools to deliver HDR viewing experiences to viewers in Europe,” observed Allie.

Challenges of Delivering SDR and HDR Content

HDR is creating new opportunities to deliver tangible improvements to the viewing experience. However, bringing these experiences to market has called for the industry to go through a learning curve. As service providers and broadcasters consider the benefits of HDR, there are technical considerations that require attention to effectively leverage HDR solutions, according to Ateme’s Raulet.

“As it pertains to broadcast, things can become complicated when ensuring HDR technology is compatible with the wide range of equipment that broadcasters or service providers use in workflows. The initial version of the HEVC codecs — especially those that have already been deployed to market — have required some updates to be interoperable with HDR. This technical challenge varies from region to region in Europe. That said, network service providers and broadcasters can overcome this challenge through relatively minor adjustments. The most recent HEVC codecs — those that are entering the market now — need no adjustments to work with HDR content, said Raulet.

Roundtable attendee, Buland Iqbal with Pakistan’s Metro1 News shared how his news station attempted to utilize both SDR and HDR content in their transmission operations. What he discovered is that the archiving and storage of content in both formats has proved complicated and expensive.

“That,” explained Allie, “is why with Advanced HDR by Technicolor solutions, we have invested in not only creating a single-stream solution that supports both SDR and HDR formats, but also in ensuring that an effective ’round-trip’ capability is available to ensure that SDR conversions to HDR can be returned to their original state with complete fidelity to the original format. The ability to seamlessly convert SDR to HDR — and back again — is critical in supporting broadcasters and operators in today’s hybrid market. Until the entire market shifts to HDR, simultaneously supporting SDR in a seamless, technically effective and cost-efficient manner is critical.”

The complexities and cost realities of upgrading content archives or storage of HDR content requires automated tools that have the ability to tune streams according to specific broadcasters’ specifications. This is especially important when it comes to live production — such as news and sports coverage, noted Cobalt Digital’s Noronha.

“The amount of SDR content — prior to conversion to HDR — that live broadcasters must deal with at the ingest point is tremendous. The application of Advanced HDR by Technicolor solutions solves this issue by enabling broadcasters to handle SDR content during live production by adding metadata to upconvert the SDR into HDR. This necessary step introduces critical information to enable – in a single stream – a broadcaster to deliver HDR content while retaining the quality of the SDR content,” explained Noronha.

FAST Channels Offer Mix of Old and New Content

Paul Erickson, of Erickson Strategy Insights, asked about the role of HDR in the over-the-top (OTT) streaming environment, where the market is seeing a significant rise in free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels rolling out a mixture of legacy content – often in SDR – and new HDR content.

“The technology is all there to take SDR content — including advertisements — and upconvert them to HDR in real-time through a single stream,” said Noronha. “Advanced HDR by Technicolor technology manages the complexity and allows the signal to deliver content to consumers based on what their devices are capable of displaying. If the end user has a device that is capable of displaying HDR, it will understand the metadata for the enhanced viewing experience. Otherwise, the viewer will receive a perfectly good SDR image.”

Arthuis, from BBright, concurred.

“Often a broadcaster has high-quality HDR content, but the advertisements are in various SDR formats. This is a typical use case for broadcasters to upconvert specific SDR advertisements to HDR on the fly so that viewers can enjoy a consistent, high-quality experience,” he said.

Live Sports Requires Intelligent Solutions for HDR

Live out-door sporting events represent one of the major points of interest driving network service providers and broadcasters to explore deployment of HDR technologies in European markets. Changing lighting conditions during these events represents a major challenge for broadcast producers

“This is why you need systems to be automated in an intelligent manner. It is not feasible to rely on production staff and manual processes,” states Noronha. “Artificial intelligence and machine learning technology make it possible to automate these critical operational tasks. That is exactly what Advanced HDR by Technicolor solutions and Cobalt Digital bring to the table for European broadcasters of live sports.”

Advanced HDR by Technicolor solutions, he explained leverage ML algorithms to conduct frame by frame analysis to add dynamic metadata. This provides the production, distribution and consumption equipment with the information necessary for upconversion to HDR.

“This is the intelligence that allows broadcasters to adapt the content into high-quality HDR,” says Allie. “Meanwhile, the production team still has the ability to tune the HDR images and expand on the automated stream. But the automated capabilities of Advanced HDR by Technicolor solutions allow this to take place with the speed and flexibility that is needed to support today’s live production environments.”

This, explained Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Aitken, is why HDR in general, and Advanced HDR by Technicolor in particular, makes economic — and competitive — sense for broadcasters.

“For broadcasters who put the customer experience at the top of the list, delivering the best visual image is an essential priority. It is what is driving Sinclair Broadcasting Group to ensure that stations implementing ATSC 3.0 do so with Advanced HDR by Technicolor, which is part of the standard,” said Aitken.

These were among the conclusions of a recent media roundtable discussion on the current state of HDR in the Americas. The executive gathering, streamed to a community of journalists covering the conference, featured experts from Sinclair Broadcast Group, MediaTek, Ateme, Parks Associates, Cobalt Digital and Advanced HDR by Technicolor.

Like many innovations in the entertainment technology space, the HDR community has had to wrestle with the “chicken and egg” conundrum that must be resolved before the foundation is laid for broad consumer adoption. While the executive panel noted that the overwhelming majority of households have standard dynamic range (SDR) technologies in place today, the coordinated efforts of the ecosystem are beginning to pay off. This is providing consumers with the confidence that investments made in next-generation TVs and other devices will be rewarded with immersive HDR viewing experiences.

“Parks Associates conducts a quarterly survey to assess how changing consumer beliefs and criteria shape their decision-making and buying habits. “We have found a significant increase in consumer demand for HDR quality viewing experiences across the range of content. While there is still some confusion around the actual process of converting content to HDR, they [consumers] equate HDR with better-quality pictures. We believe CE manufacturers and broadcasters are responding to this shifting consumer attitude and we fully expect HDR adoption rates to continue to increase,” said Paul Erickson, research director for entertainment and consumer electronics at Parks Associates.

We are currently delivering HDR content through 28 stations across the United States,” said Aitken.

If We Build it They Will Come

Sinclair Broadcast Group has indeed been setting the pace for the rest of the broadcast industry in terms of both quality and quantity of deployments. Sinclair will have 40 stations lit up in HDR by the end of 2022 by harnessing the new intelligent capabilities of ATSC 3.0 and Advanced HDR by Technicolor, according to Tony Bozzini, head of business development for the Advanced HDR by Technicolor solution. It is a suite of HDR production, distribution and display solutions that leverages machine learning (ML) technology to maximize image quality and enhance the consumer viewing experience. It is a single stream solution for delivering the highest quality SDR and HDR content.

“Sinclair is delivering various forms of content from live sporting events to broadcast news in HDR and ensuring that viewers — regardless of whether their TVs support SDR or HDR — receive the very best viewing experience possible,” said Bozzini.

This is what makes forward and backward compatibility so essential. Sports in general and outdoor field sports — like soccer, tennis, football and baseball — figure to be big beneficiaries of Advanced HDR by Technicolor in the months and years to come because it extends the benefits of backward compatibility all the way to the production process.

“One of the challenges facing the broadcast of outdoor sporting events revolves around lighting changes and shadow shifts throughout a broadcast,” said Ryan Wallenberg, vice president of engineering at Cobalt Digital — a company that designs and manufactures 12G/6G/3G/HD/SD conversion, throwdown, and multiviewer technology for the production and broadcast television environment.

“Historically, this has been a huge challenge in the overall picture quality presented to consumers. However, Advanced HDR by Technicolor, which has been incorporated into Cobalt equipment, has machine learning capabilities that automatically senses changes in light quality and then makes adjustments to deliver seamless and consistent HDR images,” said Wallenberg.

The ability to support live HDR production while simultaneously generating SDR content in a single workflow is emerging as a critical technical and economic consideration for adoption across the ecosystem.

“If you look at the production side of live sports, there is a lot of money tied to previous generations of production trucks and camera investments,” explained Aitken. “Converting all of these to HDR would be incredibly expensive and require two separate workstreams to deliver HDR to viewers with newer TVs and SDR to viewers with legacy TVs. Advanced HDR by Technicolor addresses and simplifies the complexity of broadcasting live sporting events and gives us the best of both worlds,” he said.

The ability to simultaneously support HDR and SDR is also a major economic factor for the consumer electronics segment of the ecosystem.

“There is a big push for manufacturers to develop lower price point consumer devices,” said Alfred Chan, vice president of the TV business unit and smart home business group of MediaTek — the leading manufacturer of systems-on-chips (SoC) that supplies 95 percent of TV brands around the world.

“They, along with content developers and broadcast groups like Sinclair, are looking to incorporate technologies like Advanced HDR by Technicolor to streamline SDR to HDR production, which can deliver HDR quality images while supporting SDR at no additional cost and with no compromise of quality. This two-pronged approach will increase HDR adoption rates.”

In the final analysis, according to Mickael Raulet, chief technology officer at Ateme — a global leader of video compression and delivery solutions helping tier-one content providers, service providers and streaming platforms — sustained success, acceptance and adoption of HDR will hinge on the quality of experience delivered to consumers.

“As the old saying goes, ‘Content is King’ The ability to deliver consistent viewing experiences across all content is becoming apparent to content producers, broadcasters and CE manufacturers. This level of viewing experience needs to be consistent. If a consumer is watching a sporting event in HDR and it is interrupted by commercials in SDR, the viewing experience can be quite jarring. Other members of the ecosystem — such as advertisers — are taking notice of this. We expect high-end consumer goods, like automobiles, to demand that their spots have the same HDR viewing experience,” he concluded.

Watch an excerpt from the roundtable discussion on the state of HDR in the Americas.

 Dec. 16, 2021—
2022 is shaping up to be a very big year for NextGen TV as the adoption of Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) version 3.0 and rapidly maturing video technologies like high dynamic range (HDR) gather momentum. The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) recently increased their estimate of televisions sold with ATSC 3.0 capability in 2021 from 800,000 to more than 2 million units. That is a huge increase. It indicates that there is now a ready market for consumers to receive the advanced services included in the standard.

The ATSC 3.0 Standard defines the official specifications and criteria necessary for effective implementation and interoperability of Advanced Terrestrial Broadcast Systems. Since its announcement at the 2018 CES, it has taken the broadcast and consumer electronics sectors by storm despite a global pandemic. It continues to change the way the world experiences entertainment and broadcast.

“ATSC 3.0 can deliver more pixels at higher quality for ultra high definition (UHD), 4K, and HDR screens. This is a significant upgrade for customers with large screens,” says Alan Stein, vice president of technology at InterDigital, in a podcast interview for journalists.

In addition, ATSC 3.0 offers personalization, interactivity, and broadcaster applications, while also supporting mobile delivery. The latter is a hot topic among ATSC members working to address the possibility of cell phones receiving ATSC 3.0 signals. It is an ATSC application being actively explored in countries like India—where infrastructure limitations have triggered interest in creative ways of delivering high-quality video to consumers in a scalable, cost-effective manner. It also illustrates the international appeal of the standard. The most significant developments, however, are currently taking place in the United States.

ATSC 3.0 and HDR Have Captured the Market’s Attention

“About 40% of the US public today is served by a minimum of one ATSC 3.0 signal and related services. By the end of 2021, we expect that number to top 50%,” says Mark Aitken, senior vice president of technology for Sinclair Broadcast Group and president of ONE media.

“HDR is one of the features that most visibly improves the consumption of over-the-air (OTA) and over-the-top (OTT) content. It greatly enhances the viewing experience, especially for things like live sports,” says Stein.

Sony recently revealed that all their television products for the second half of 2021 would be ATSC 3.0 enabled, supporting next-generation features, including HDR, UVoice, and a variety of other capabilities that enhance the viewing experience for the American public.

“Companies like Sony—and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon—are utilizing HDR to enhance viewer experience for as much of the market as possible. The broadcast industry is responding rapidly. For those that embrace HDR early, it is a clear way to establish differentiation, which is critical with fierce competition,” explains Aitken.

Broadcast, he added, remains one of the most ubiquitously available technologies in the market, which is why it has been so essential to develop standards that can evolve to deliver experiences that consumers across the nation expect and increase demand. It ensures that the needs of all segments of the market are met—even as we move forward as quickly as possible to keep up with improvements in technology.

Blurring the Lines Between OTT and OTA

ATSC 3.0 is providing an opportunity for over-the-air broadcasters to play in the digital space and become online content providers. HDR is thriving in the OTT arena, and broadcasters are quickly gaining ground with ATSC 3.0 and Advanced HDR by Technicolor.

“One area in which broadcasters consistently enjoy a competitive advantage over OTT providers is in the delivery of live sports programming. It is also a category of content that takes full advantage of HDR technology. HDR was on full display this year during the exceptional U.S. Open tennis championship broadcast over Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Tennis Channel,” says AItken.

“The Tennis Channel, which is brought to consumers through the Bally Sports Regional Networks in 23 markets, will be using Advanced HDR by Technicolor for both our streaming and over-the-air broadcast services in 2022,” he adds.

The U.S. Open showcased how ATSC 3.0 and Advanced HDR, by Technicolor are dramatically narrowing the competitive gap between over-the-air and streaming service providers. Moreover, the integration of emerging technologies enabled by the new internet protocol (IP) friendly standard provides an important bridge for broadcasters to move into the rapidly evolving streaming market.

“It is an important milestone. We’re now seeing broadcast apps that embrace and extend the best ideas from OTT services while still having the scale and channel change speed that consumers like about traditional television. This allows broadcasters to play to their strengths, highlighting the absence of latency and unreliability that you sometimes get with some streaming applications and devices,” says Stein.

Advanced HDR by Technicolor’s Impact on Broadcast

According to Stein, Advanced HDR by Technicolor is the only industry solution that enables a standard dynamic range (SDR)—a non-HDR signal—and an HDR signal to be simultaneously delivered in one bitstream. It is an economically efficient and technically effective solution because it sidesteps the need for broadcasters to use two channels to bring both HDR and SDR services to consumers. This backward compatibility is critical because of the widespread presence of legacy SDR televisions and set-top boxes that remain in the market today.

From a production perspective, Advanced HDR by Technicolor also supports the ability for broadcasters to use HDR cameras—which bring higher quality into live production—and integrate those inputs with SDR cameras into a single distribution workflow in a way that automatically adjusts to the capabilities of the receiving device, regardless of whether they are HDR or SDR capable.

“If you’ve got a television set that was manufactured in the last three years, and it’s 4K HDR-capable, you can connect your gateway or set-top box, and you’ve got glorious eye-popping HDR television. It also maximizes the experience of SDR-only devices. Either way, we want people to see the difference,” concludes Aitken.

Dec. 01, 2021—Broadcasters, streaming service providers, and Smart TV manufacturers alike are re-positioning themselves to address evolving customer expectations in North America for higher quality video experiences. A broader discussion surrounding viewing standards has emerged to integrate emerging technologies, improve ease of customer use, and ensure compatibility and interoperability with new and legacy services.

These were among the conclusions of a virtual media roundtable discussion hosted by Advanced HDR by Technicolor, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Cobalt Digital, Cinnafilm, Hisense, and MediaTek.

Over a dozen industry leaders, analysts, and journalists from leading media outlets covering the broadcasting, content streaming, consumer electronics, and production community gathered to explore:

The state of ATSC 3.0 and the role high dynamic range (HDR) technology is playing in meeting consumer expectations for viewing quality;

How advanced technologies are influencing the broadcast community in the United States; and

The importance of establishing integrated ecosystems to deploy HDR services and solutions that enhances all content — including legacy standard dynamic range (SDR) content.

Advanced Picture Quality is Rapidly Penetrating the U.S. Market

The alphabet soup of HDR formats and standards (PQ, HDR10, HLG, etc.) has created marketplace confusion over how to deliver high-quality content and functions to consumers. However, according to Mark Aitken, senior vice president, advanced technology, and president ONE media 3.0 with the Sinclair Broadcast Group, a maturing technology landscape has triggered a massive uptick in sales of next-generation smart and connected televisions (SmartTVs and CTVs).

It bodes well for HDR adoption because the prevailing market trends are not only enhancing viewing experiences of live productions but also upgrading legacy content libraries.

“HDR rollouts are moving at a breakneck pace, on track to cover 50% of the U.S. public by the end of 2021. The exceptional video quality enabled by HDR is elevating experiences more than any resolution enhancements. The industry is rapidly concluding that HDR will have to be on the table to effectively grab consumers’ attention and engage them in a meaningful way,” he said.

This shift, he added, is reflected by the fact that the North American Broadcaster Association (NABA) recently proclaimed HDR10 as the unified emission format of choice for its members and explicitly mentioned SL-HDR1 (the technical term for Advanced HDR by Technicolor) as a conveyance vehicle for implementation.

“It resolves the debate of Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) frame rate versus PQ in terms of over-the-air signal formats,” Aitken adds. “Advanced HDR by Technicolor provides the opportunity to address the new generation of TV sets. This opens the door to the industry exceeding initial target penetration rates by 150% or more for ATSC 3.0 next-generation TV set deployment in the US.”

Similar expectations are set for 2022, approaching 70% coverage in the U.S. by the second half of the year.

Upgrading Legacy Content Key to Driving Adoption

As the distribution ecosystem supporting ATSC 3.0 and HDR matures, it will be critical to ensure that content captured and stored in SDR can be experienced in an enhanced state.

“When consumers see TVs that are on display in brick-and-mortars with images shot in HDR, they expect to have the same experience when they view content coming through their set-top box,” said Ernie Sanchez, co-founder of Cinnafilm, a global leader in innovative video optimization solutions for television, film, and multi-media delivery.

“The problem is that the vast majority of content in libraries today was filmed in SDR. This can be jarring to viewers who are left to wrestle with inconsistent experiences. It can leave many customers disappointed,” he said.

This, however, is changing.

The rollout of ATSC 3.0 opens the door for cable companies, broadcasters, and other content library owners to leverage solutions like Advanced HDR by Technicolor to upconvert movies and episodic programming so that they can be re-experienced in an enhanced format that is consistent with consumer expectations.

“There are millions of SDR content hours in English caches alone. This is content that can be rapid — and cost-effectively — repurposed for the HDR ecosystem,” said Sanchez.

“Many technology solutions for conversion are manual. With Advanced HDR by Technicolor’s Intelligent Tone Management (ITM), automated upconversion often delivers better results than having professional colorists manually go scene by scene. It makes it possible to upconvert large libraries of video content quickly and in a high-quality manner, which will be very important to content owners that want to keep up with market demand,” he added.

An abundant supply of HDR content—or SDR content that can be rapidly upconverted to HDR—will play an important role in driving demand for next-generation TVs offered by companies like Hisense.

“Ensuring that consumers understand that there is a lot of content that can be experienced in HDR will be key. Current communications about HDR — which tend to focus on technical specifications and formats — can be very confusing to users. It is important to have a message that resonates with consumers who want to improve their viewing experiences at home with their next television purchase. I think that we’re heading in the right direction, which is why we are working with Advanced HDR by Technicolor,” said Niko Savovic, senior manager in research and development of laboratory operations Hisense.

Automation and AI/ML

Artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) are playing a critical role in providing seamless backward and forward compatibility to deliver seamless consumption for customers without manual intervention.

The artists and scientists behind the development of Advanced HDR by Technicolor leaned into AI capabilities to create automated conversion tools, according to Alan Stein, vice president of technology at InterDigital, a technology research and development company that provides wireless and video technologies for mobile devices, networks, and services worldwide.

“Scientists at Technicolor spent years developing effective machine learning algorithms. The presets offered within Advanced HDR by Technicolor was developed with significant input from Technicolor colorists so that HDR content that is up to Hollywood standards is delivered to consumers,” he says.

Automatic upconversion will also be important for categories of content that surround live broadcasts, feature films, or episodic programming. Certain categories of commercials, for instance, are rarely filmed in HDR.

“Any consumer viewing experience that is interrupted by a down-converted ad will inevitably question the abilities of their device or service provider,” said Tony Bozzini, head of business development with Advanced HDR by Technicolor.

The good news is that a robust end-to-end AI/ML ecosystem is rapidly evolving to support the capture, production, distribution, and consumption of HDR content.

“That is why we are integrating Advanced HDR by Technicolor into our technologies to support the broadcast of live sports,” said Dr. Ciro Noronha, executive vice president of engineering at Cobalt Digital, a leading designer and manufacturer of award-winning edge devices that help live video production and master control client’s transition to IP, 4K, HDR, the cloud, and beyond.

“These are extremely dynamic environments in which lighting conditions change as the day goes on. Moreover, the action is captured by a range of cameras — including HDR and SDR equipment. Advanced automation technologies play a significant role in managing the complexity of available formats, including different forms of capturing content. It all has to be rationalized and optimized in real-time,” said Noronha.

The same dynamic is at play on the receiving side of the equation.

“As a leading system on a chip (SoC) provider for 95 percent of all TV brands, MediaTek has been diligently working to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to provide enhanced picture quality. Mediatek is currently deploying AI-based solutions such as Picture Quality enhancement and Super Resolution technologies which intelligently upscale high definition content to UHD/4K while improving contrast and sharpness. Next-generation TVs will be equipped with multiple high-performance AI processors to enhance the visual and audio experience of viewers,” said Alfred Chan, vice president of the TV business unit for MediaTek, a Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company that provides chips for high-definition television and other devices, including handheld mobile devices like smartphones and tablet computers.

“AI and machine learning will be critical to enabling TVs to detect the content format and automate viewing settings that can learn and adjust to the preferences and desires of viewers to optimize their experience,” he concludes.

SILVER SPRING, Md. – Aug. 31, 2021 – PRLog—The return of live sports—including the 2021 Summer Olympics—as we hopefully approach a post-pandemic era is encouraging sports fans around the world to gather and view major events in stadiums, bars, restaurants—and homes. The challenge before broadcasters rests on delivering consistent, high quality, high dynamic range (HDR) and ultra-high definition (UHD) content while addressing unpredictable environments of outdoor events. So say Bob Nicholas, Vice President International Sales at Cobalt Digital, and Guy Ducos, Business Development Executive for Advanced HDR by Technicolor in a recent podcast interview for journalists.

Getting HDR right in today’s live broadcasting environment is critical because consumers have grown accustomed to the high production values that major theatrical releases and episodic television series make available through streaming services. This high-quality content stems from highly controlled studio environments and comprehensive post-production efforts that carefully apply HDR and UHD technologies to enhance the visual experience.

“This is a real challenge faced by live broadcasters that is not shared by streaming service providers. During live events, live broadcasters have to work with a mix of content—the sporting or entertainment event itself and advertisements that are provided in a wide range of formats. Once they decide to broadcast in HDR they need to harmonize and distribute a consistent, high-quality broadcast stream,” explains Ducos of Advanced HDR by Technicolor.

Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a suite of HDR production, distribution, and display solutions that leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to maximize the image quality of any HDR format. The single-stream solution (which simultaneously delivers standard dynamic range and high dynamic range signals) was designed to protect—and enhance—investments made by industry and consumers in legacy infrastructure and devices.

“Great strides have been made to address the complex challenges of delivering high-quality live broadcasts by integrating emerging technologies into the live production process to facilitate the delivery of enhanced video. Artificial intelligence, for instance, has emerged as a critical factor in managing the high level of complexity associated with optimizing the production and distribution of live content,” says Nicholas of Cobalt Digital.

Cobalt Digital designs and manufactures award-winning edge devices that help live-video production and master-control clients transition to IP, UHD, HDR, the cloud, and beyond. The company brings a wealth of experience in optimizing outside broadcasting (OB) trucks to support the effective transmission of live events.

“With live sporting events, there is no post-production stage. This is forcing broadcasters to explore how to accept various video formats and levels of quality as input and then generate a single consistent high-quality broadcast stream to standard dynamic range (SDR) and HDR televisions. It is important for broadcasters to ensure that all end-users enjoy a consistently high-quality experience throughout the entire event,” says Ducos.

Delivering on this imperative raises a range of technical and economic complexity. The single-stream solution that Cobalt Digital and Advanced HDR by Technicolor offer broadcasters address both challenges.

“Placing Advanced HDR Technicolor within our 9904-UDX-4K cards, for instance, makes HDR management easily accessible in the transmission chain for broadcasters. Moreover, there are many benefits to single-stream, apart from the fact that it significantly cuts down transmission costs,” says Nicholas.

These attributes are capturing the interest of a growing number of broadcasters who are preparing to deliver enhanced live sporting experiences to their audiences.

“You can really see the benefits of our joint approach in the NextGen TV stations being deployed by the Sinclair Broadcast Group across the United States, which is using Advanced HDR by Technicolor,” says Ducos.

Broadcasters are able to stream SDR with metadata, which means that any TV or mobile device can receive and display a high-quality image. The stream can then be converted to HDR by devices that are properly equipped.

WNUV is the 16th Sinclair-operated station to commercially deploy Advanced HDR by Technicolor, making the company the largest HDR broadcaster in the country, with plans to expand the application as it continues to roll out the technology to other stations, demonstrating the company’s commitment to delivering premium viewing experiences.

“This is the latest example of the leadership Sinclair is exhibiting in providing audiences with access to sophisticated over-the-air (OTA) and over-the-top (OTT) streaming content. The leadership at Sinclair has played a major role in harnessing the power of technology included in the ATSC 3.0 broadcast standards to provide viewers with clear, immersive, and exciting visual experiences,” says Tony Bozzini, head of business development with Advanced HDR by Technicolor.

Leveraging AI, Advanced HDR by Technicolor enables content creators and broadcasters to conserve resources and reduce costs thanks to the suite’s highly automated conversion processes between legacy standard dynamic range (SDR) and HDR.
