Technicolor’s Frank Debo: Network Service Providers in EMEA Turn up the Heat on HDR Adoption

AMSTERDAM – Sept. 15, 2017—IBC 2017—Network service providers (NSPs) across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) are actively testing and making plans for the deployment of High Dynamic Range (HDR) content over their infrastructures, according to Frank Debo, Vice President for Business Development in the EMEA region for Technicolor’s Connected Home division, in a podcast interview for journalists.

The technology, he says, promises a dramatic, positive impact on the consumer viewing experience with more vivid colors, richer contrasts, deeper shadows, and brighter highlights. But there are challenges. NSPs need standard solutions that reduce the complexities of content creation, distribution, and consumption, and there’s still a shortage of HDR-capable TV sets.

“HDR is really seen as an opportunity, a game-changer,” says Debo. “It’s not only going to help the service providers bring great content to mobile devices—smartphones and tablets—it’s helping also to get superb HDR quality to the TVs in people’s homes. HDR will rapidly become much more widely adopted and, in fact, will become the de facto standard for video distribution.”

Key players in the region, including large service providers like British Telecom, Orange, Liberty Global, Vodafone, and Sky Europe are already engaged in HDR trials. Many, says Debo, are even announcing plans to launch HDR-capable channels in the near future.

“They’re starting field trials to get more familiar with the technology and see how they can also start to deploy it more widely into their footprints. What we also see is that many operators—when they ask for their next-generation solutions through requests for proposals (RFPs)—are seeking support for HDR. That’s an indication that HDR is well on its way to becoming more widely adopted by the service provider community in this region,” explains Debo.

An effective HDR strategy is also emerging as an important aspect of how NSPs address the rise of over-the-top (OTT) services that are gaining popularity in EMEA.

“I think it’s going to be an absolute must for the NSP. For example, look at Netflix, which is already deploying HDR content on its platform. We are having multiple types of conversations and engagements with service providers about how HDR should be integrated into their OTT response strategies. We are exploring how Technicolor can help to get HDR deployed to mass markets; what needs to happen to address a hybrid environment because all TVs are not HDR-capable yet; and how NSPs can move forward in an effective and cost-efficient manner,” says Debo.

Technicolor’s Alan Stein Explains How Acceptance of Technicolor HDR as an ATSC 3.0 Candidate Standard Offers More Options for Broadcasters

AMSTERDAM – Sept. 13, 2017—PRE-IBC 2017—During the IBC 2017 conference in Amsterdam this weekend, executives from Technicolor and its partners will be on hand to discuss the latest developments in high dynamic range (HDR) technology. In a podcast interview for journalists, Alan Stein, Technicolor’s Vice President of Technology and Standards, reports that another step toward advancing the use of HDR in broadcasting has been taken with the recent approval of SL-HDR1 (also known as Technicolor HDR) as a Candidate Standard Amendment to A/341, the ATSC 3.0 video specification.

“Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a technology solution that consists of Technicolor HDR (SL-HDR1) and Technicolor Intelligent Tone Management (ITM). Technicolor HDR takes in any SDR or HDR format and distributes it to any device and appropriately presents the correct image for SDR-capable devices or HDR-capable devices. Technicolor ITM offers the ability to up-convert SDR content to HDR-capable devices during the distribution process,” he says.

SL-HDR1 is a unique solution in that it takes HDR video and converts it into a format that can be viewed on legacy HD televisions. However, the content can be converted back to HDR for newer devices, so that one can address both the legacy market and the new television market within a single stream. SL-HDR1 can convert HDR to SDR – a process known as tone mapping.

“This is very interesting for broadcasters who are starting to do live productions in HDR but deliver on their legacy networks in SDR. It is critically important for broadcasters because they want to send one stream (not simulcast.) While over-the-top (OTT) providers can easily send multiple streams to consumers (SDR to SDR devices and HDR to HDR devices), broadcasters and—to some extent—cable providers, would be burdened quite significantly if they had to simulcast multiple streams,” Stein says.

Technicolor has successfully tested this capability several times over the past two years. Most recently, at the end of July, Technicolor worked with Spectrum SportsNet in Los Angeles to broadcast two Los Angeles Dodgers – San Francisco Giants games, using SL-HDR1’s tone mapping to convert the HDR production to SDR for nationwide distribution.

Looking ahead, Stein says U.S. broadcasters plan to have large-scale trials in 2017 and early 2018 with commercial services possible later in 2018 and early 2019.

“The decision to add Technicolor HDR into the ATSC 3.0 toolkit encourages the technology’s implementation into the next generation of television sets and other consumer electronics products,” concludes Stein.

Technicolor’s Kirk Barker Discusses How Operators in APAC Region Can Harness HDR to Enhance TV Viewing Experiences

SINGAPORE – May 25, 2017—CMMA 2017—The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region has its sights on High Dynamic Range (HDR), an imaging technology that manages luminescence to provide richer contrasts, deeper shadows, and brighter highlights. And although standards are still evolving, it’s time to go live with HDR productions, according to Kirk Barker—Senior Vice President of Engineering And Product Management, Technicolorin —a recent podcast for journalists.

“At this point, we’ve been doing a lot of trials, a lot of testing, and we think we have the workflows worked out. It’s time to make this thing real and to really get it out into consumers’ hands. There are no major blockers,” says Barker. “We now have TVs that are in the marketplace that can do in excess of 1,000 nits. We’ve got distribution technologies that are cost-efficient and are able to be done in a way that can support existing infrastructures. And we have production tools and the capabilities to do live productions—in addition to offline workflows. We have everything we need to make it real today.”

Technicolor has been working with a number of partners in the APAC region to roll out HDR technologies.

“What’s exciting is that with some of our solutions we can roll out an upconverted HDR version of either a movie or episodic content at a very small incremental increase to the overall cost of production. So, unlike some of the other technologies —where you have to throw out everything that is currently in place, causing huge capital improvement investments—here’s a technology that has demonstrable value to customers and can be provided at a reasonable cost. It can really put network service providers (NSPs) who deploy HDR in a position to make a difference,” explains Barker.

The other advantage for Asia Pacific is that many countries have relatively high internet speeds. This allows them to deploy HDR technology very quickly without changing out the broadcast infrastructure, utilizing internet protocol (IP) and over-the-top (OTT) services to provide an HDR version of content with even a greater speed to market.

Beyond the service provider community, Technicolor is also working with big players in the consumer electronics arena.

“We believe it’s very important to create the best possible displays. That’s why we’ve teamed with partners like LG. The distribution can be done in a way that provides both high-quality SDR signals and high-quality HDR signals, in a compression-efficient manner that is distributed in a way that can be supported from an operational perspective. And that’s why we’re working with partners like SK Broadband,” says Barker.

“Finally, on the production side, it is fine that you can display great content and can distribute great content, but you actually have to create great content. And that’s where we’re working with our partners on the production trucks and on the grading of content to make sure that we really get that part right as well. If we’re not able to produce a really stunning sports game in HDR, then it won’t matter that you have these great TVs.”

LAS VEGAS – April 24, 2017—NAB 2017—New devices like the Android TV-based AirTV devices that integrate over-the-air and over-the-top content are being well-received by consumers because they overcome some of the limitations with over-the-top content. However, according to Brian Jentz, Senior Director of Product Management with Technicolor’s Connected Home Division, the introduction of the new TV broadcasting standards, ATSC 3.0 will create many more opportunities for over-the-air broadcasters to exploit this integration.

ATSC 3.0 is a major revision of the ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) standards that will support mobile television, 3D television, 4K UHD, high dynamic range (HDR), high frame rate (HFR), and wide color gamut (WCG).

Jentz believes ATSC 3.0 will gain traction very quickly.

“It is targeted to do a couple of things that are really important: improve indoor antenna reception and bring in advanced HDR technologies optimized for higher quality and for efficient delivery of linear content, which is key to what the broadcasters care about,” says Jentz in a podcast interview for journalists.

Until ATSC 3.0 becomes widely available he believes broadcasters will be able to deliver premium HDR content using streaming technologies, thanks to Android TV.

“The industry is coming out with new Android TV set-top boxes that will be based on Android Nougat and SOCs that integrate advanced HDR technologies from Technicolor and Dolby, and Android Nougat includes a new set of APIs that make it easier to deploy and integrate HDR,” he says.

Jentz is particularly excited about the integration of broadband and over-the-air delivered services that ATSC 3.0 will make possible, such as watching your favorite team play an away game while listening to your home team’s announcers. “I think that is very very powerful,” he says. “Bringing that to ATSC 3.0 with all its other advantages really gives the broadcasters a unique capability.”

Technicolor, he adds, is in a unique position to help broadcasters exploit the potential of ATSC 3.0.

“All our new Android TV set-top boxes have either a single or dual integrated ATSC tuner option and in several of our Android TV product lines, we are offering advanced HDR capability. Today that integration uses the existing ATSC 1.0 standard but we aim to be at the forefront of ATSC 3.0 integration.”

LAS VEGAS – April 24, 2017—NAB 2017—As Android TV and other OTT offerings converge with OTA broadcasts, it is important to have a robust, comprehensive SDR/HDR delivery solution that can manage the complexity of multiple formats and networking environments, says Alan Stein, Vice President of Technology Development and Standards at Technicolor, in a podcast interview for journalists.

Broadcasters around the globe want to incorporate state-of-the-art systems and capabilities into their next-generation systems and expect the upcoming ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard to play a big part in those efforts. South Korea is adopting ATSC 3.0 as its next-generation broadcast standard and is actively working to have ATSC 3.0 systems, including High Dynamic Range (HDR) capabilities, on the air by the 2018 Winter Olympics, which the country is hosting.

ATSC 3.0 is a suite of broadcast standards for transmitting IP packets over the air. Most of the standards are now in the final stages of completion, and it’s expected that mature and commercial ATSC 3.0-compatible products will be unveiled at NAB 2017.

ATSC 3.0 is internet-compatible in a way that original HD over-the-air transmissions weren’t. Gone are arcane, broadcast-only protocols, and in place are standards leveraging internet protocol delivery. ATSC 3.0 brings IP video over the air. Audio and video are sent in separate streams, so an operator can deliver programming featuring several languages, for instance. And some of those alternate language audio streams could come via a hybrid (over-the-top) path. ATSC 3.0 was designed from the ground up to support broadcast plus broadband, aka hybrid broadcast/broadband TV.

In addition to the targeted broadcasts and HDR capability, there’s also the potential for robust interactive functionality. One remaining challenge will be ensuring that consumers who have TVs that work only with standard dynamic range (SDR) video don’t get left behind as broadcasters migrate to HDR. What’s needed is an approach that can unify the SDR/HDR experience, and Technicolor’s HDR solution does just that.

14 demonstrations highlighting fully operational UHD features, as well as future capabilities, can be seen at booth N1131FP

FREMONT, Calif. – April 23, 2017—The Ultra HD Forum, the global organization defining industry best practices for the introduction of technologies to facilitate the ultra-high-definition (UHD) viewing experiences, will bring more than a dozen demonstrations to booth N1131FP during the NAB Show.

Deployable Phase A technologies that represent current challenges will be demonstrated at three stations in the booth: Broadcaster HDR Video delivery, SDR and HDR mixing, and delivering Quality HDR Video.

Upcoming opportunities to improve consumer experience will be demonstrated with new Phase B technologies and will also be organized into three stations: Dynamic HDR Metadata, HDR and SDR Improvements, and High Frame Rate Video.

Technicolor’s Kirk Barker Explains how HDR Sports Broadcasts can be Implemented without Disrupting Existing Workflows

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – March 29, 2017—High dynamic range (HDR) video promises a much-improved live sports viewing experience that can be offered by broadcasters. However, doing so does present some technical challenges that need to be addressed, explains Kirk Barker, Senior Vice President of Emerging Products with Technicolor in a podcast interview for journalists.

Technicolor recently worked with Spectrum SportsNet to broadcast a Lakers game from Los Angeles in both standard dynamic range (SDR) and HDR. While Technicolor supplied the SDR to HDR conversion units for use in the broadcast trucks, Barker points out that a great deal of the value is delivered by technology that is embedded into TVs, set-top boxes, and other devices that need to handle content in both SDR and the multiple versions of HDR to ensure an optimal viewing experience.

“We believe the solution implemented in the end device, the TV or the set-top box, has to be able to accept a variety of different formats and that will be one of the selling points of Advanced HDR by Technicolor,” Barker says.

Two of the big challenges Barker sees are: ensuring that all the different formats are displayed at their correct light level—or luminance—and that the technology is sufficiently future-proof to handle developments down the track.

“The system must be able to translate between different electro-optical transfer functions. It must be able to convert SDR up to HDR and convert HDR down to different luminance. And the set-top box has to be aware of the graphics, like the overlays for the scores. All that has to be managed to a consistent luminance. The solutions we are developing with our set-top box partners have all of those components.”

“Technicolor,” he says, “is future-proofing its universal HDR distribution technology.”

“Any system must be able to adapt and transition. With our system you could start today with HLG, transition to HDR10 in the future, and then maybe beyond HDR10 to HDR10 with enhancements,” he explains.

Despite the challenges and the complexity, Barker is confident HDR technology will be successful. He says the Lakers HDR broadcast proves that it is viable today. “The future of HDR is very bright.”

HOLLYWOOD, California- March 14, 2017 —As broadcasters look for ways to deliver better video experiences to consumers who invest in the latest generation of television sets, the industry has set its sights on High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology. Broadcasters are testing the ability to bring major sporting events to consumers who can receive HDR signals…without leaving SDR audiences behind.

In a podcast interview for journalists, Josh Limor, VP of Technology and Ecosystem Development at Technicolor, discusses the latest demonstration of HDR in action during the first live end-to-end HDR broadcast of a Spectrum SportsNet NBA game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets (including commercials, other interstitials, and graphics).

“To date,” explains Limor, “there have been a lot of tests to broadcast different elements of HDR. Our goal with this broadcast was to take it to the next step.”

Technicolor had already been involved in demonstrating how a standard dynamic range (SDR) production of a live sporting event could be up-converted to HDR and distributed to people’s homes through Technicolor’s HDR distribution platform.

“This time, the production involved a mixture of HDR and SDR elements; some of the cameras were shooting native HDR, and some cameras were standard dynamic range. We were able to show how to create a high dynamic range broadcast that can be distributed in standard dynamic range and high dynamic range to people’s homes,” he says.

The SDR cameras were up-converted to HDR using Technicolor’s Intelligent Tone Management (ITM) technology, and all of the content was cut together and produced in SLOG3, Sony’s proprietary HDR log curve.

“A unique feature of Technicolor’s distribution platform is that it doesn’t care what HDR curve you’re using, it’s compatible with all of them – PQ, HLG, SLOG3, or anything else that anyone comes up with next. Our distribution takes that into account to distribute it appropriately to each and every home,” says Limor.

HDR devices are still relatively new in consumers’ homes. While prices for HDR sets are already beginning to drop year over year to drive demand for HDR technology, the market is still in its early stages.

“In the meantime, we have shown that we can link the SDR and HDR worlds in a single stream broadcast. This allows broadcasters to move confidently forward and advance their HDR production strategy,” Limor says.

HDR Partnership Between MSTAR and Technicolor Demonstrated at IBC 2016

AMSTERDAM – Sept. 14, 2016—Consumers will be quick to appreciate advanced high dynamic range (HDR) video, and service providers will be eager to deliver it to them. Technicolor is working with semiconductor manufacturers to enable advanced HDR set-top boxes to be produced in volume at low cost, says Brian Jentz, Senior Director of Product Management at Technicolor Connected Home.

Jentz explains that Advanced HDR from Technicolor offers the market a big improvement on the basic HDR technology that is already in the market.

“Advanced HDR enables a consumer to playback any HDR content on existing Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) TVs, or, if they have a new HDR TV, they can take full advantage of the content. This is done by sending one single content stream that includes standard dynamic range data plus HDR, through the use of metadata,” he explains.

This is a big advantage over the more basic HDR technologies that have started to roll out this year. The other advantage Advanced HDR technology brings is tone management, which creates the ability to up-convert SDR to HDR in the home, on a set-top box. In so doing, viewers have uninterrupted HDR capability displayed on their TVs.

However, Advanced HDR requires additional hardware in set-top boxes, and to enable these to be produced cost-effectively in large volumes, the necessary hardware functions will have to be embedded in silicon. Technicolor is working closely with system-on-a-chip (SoC) makers to help them develop SoC products able to process advanced HDR video. At IBC in Amsterdam Technicolor demonstrated the results of its collaboration with one SoC manufacturer, MStar.

“We worked with MStar early on to integrate our intellectual property into their silicon,” Jentz says. “We worked closely with them in their labs to make sure the video quality was high and up to expectations. And throughout this year we have worked closely with service providers in real-world environments to test out the end-to-end ecosystem. Now we have set-top boxes available that integrate SoCs like MStar’s that we will be rolling out for live testing.”

He expects demand for these set-top boxes to be high. “HDR is one of those technologies where people understand the benefits as soon as they see it. Service providers are no different. As soon as they see HDR they appreciate the benefits and want to bring it to their customers.”

Technicolor is demonstrating Advanced HDR from Technicolor at its technology venue during the IBC 2016 conference in Amsterdam September 9 – September 14, 2016.

AMSTERDAM – Sept. 12, 2016—Video software platform company, Zixi, has been delivering video traffic for broadcasters over the Internet for almost ten years and is now meeting the increased demands of HDR video. Its Vice President of Business Development, Eric Bolten, says Internet technologies will be essential because traditional technologies will not be sufficiently flexible and cost-effective. Zixi has been working with Technicolor to demonstrate how High Dynamic Range content can be delivered as part of comprehensive commercial broadcast offerings.

“Delivering true broadcast level contribution with the flexibility and cost structure of the Internet without giving up anything in terms of stability, reliability, security, and latency will be critical across live events, live linear and cloud delivery,” Bolten says.

Technicolor recently worked with Zixi to deliver a 20Mbps HDR signal from Denver to Los Angeles for Time Warner Communications to show a live Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game.

Zixi uses a series of advanced transmission protocols with error correction, error protection, and congestion avoidance routines to enable transmission of broadcast-quality video, but, Bolten explains, HDR presents a new set of challenges.

“By using a series of error correction routines—while being content and network-aware—Zixi is able to effectively turn the unmanaged open Internet into a video network that can deliver the highest quality of services that allows for perfect video signal with the super stability that is required by broadcasters. This is very important with HDR because any disruption of the compressed stream is going to have a greater impact on the quality of the signal than with other technologies,” says Bolten.

He says IP technologies will be essential to meet future demands of broadcasters as consumers’ appetite for video grows.

Technicolor will be demonstrating a wide array of technologies addressed by Bolten during the IBC 2016 conference in Amsterdam September 9 – September 14, 2016.
