									<p>While HDR has largely been touted as a viewing innovation that is closely associated with UHD, the team behind Advanced HDR by Technicolor—<wbr />a collaboration between Philips, InterDigital and Technicolor—<wbr />believes that HD distribution strategies for HDR can create more options for delivering higher-quality experiences for experiences across a greater range of circumstances.<br /><br />&#8220;HDR can significantly enhance HD content, not just UHD 4K, providing a better viewing experience on HD TVs and other devices. By utilizing HDR for HD content, providers can achieve bandwidth savings while delivering brilliant video content. It largely expands availability of HDR content and access to high-quality visual experiences to a broader audience,&#8221; he says.<br /><br /><b>Overcoming Misconceptions about HDR</b><br /><br />It is a message that will require an industry-wide shift in perspectives &#8212; especially among streaming providers whose customers access content from a variety of venues and circumstances.<br /><br />&#8220;The growth of streaming service providers in recent years has been driven by several factors, including increasing internet connectivity, advancements in technology, changing consumer preferences, and the proliferation of mobile devices. But they do face some challenges that must be addressed head-on,&#8221; says Dumont.<br /><br />For instance, streaming providers must ensure that content is delivered smoothly, with limited buffering, even in areas with limited internet bandwidth while maintaining a high-quality viewing experience. This means that connections for stable viewing of UHD are not always available.<br /><br />&#8220;Many people assume that HDR is married with 4K content, but that is not the case. HDR technology over HD allows viewers to enjoy improved color, contrast, and overall image quality without UHD. They can have a more immersive and visually appealing experience,&#8221;<wbr /> he says. Also, HDR improves the perceived resolution as adjacent pixels might have the same color but have different brightness that HDR will bring out.<br /><br />HDR over HD has a more significant visual impact than SDR over UHD because HDR presents more accurate colors, smoother light and color shading, and more detailed images while reducing bandwidth requirements by a factor of four simply because HD uses only one-fourth of the pixels.<br /><br />This leaves the industry with addressing the challenge of providing high-quality HDR with 8-bit coding when, theoretically, a 10-bit color depth is needed in HDR to prevent coding artifacts &#8212; like banding. It is an issue, however, that can be effectively addressed with the adoption of dynamic automation and meta-data from Advanced HDR by Technicolor.<br /><br /><b>Resolving 10-Bit Color Depth HDR Requirements for HD Streaming</b><br /><br />Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a suite of production, distribution and display solutions that leverages machine learning (ML) technology to maximize image quality and enhance the consumer viewing experience.<br /><br />The solution&#8217;s intelligent tone management (ITM) tool provides a dynamic, tunable, real-time solution to up-convert SDR content to HDR with full freedom and flexibility to manage contrast, brightness and color saturation.<br /><br />Its single Layer HDR (SL-HDR) technology is a dynamic and tunable real-time tool that implements the ETSI SL-HDR standards to generate and deliver a single, consistent, high-quality stream. SL-HDR transforms HDR input streams into SDR-plus-metadata streams. SL-HDR compatible receivers provide consumers with high-quality HDR images that can be adapted to optimize the display capabilities of their devices.<br /><br />When it comes to addressing the 10-bit color-depth performance to HD, the dynamic &#8212; or adaptive &#8212; nature of SL-HDR preprocessing allows coding to be used more efficiently compared to the static formats like HDR10 and HLG.<br /><br />&#8220;Hence where HDR10 needs a 10-bit bit-depth and typically HEVC coding, SL-HDR can use AVC in 8-bit as used by legacy systems, making it less bandwidth hungry and at the same time ensuring backward compatibility with legacy SDR systems,&#8221; states Dumont.<br /><br />The metadata transmission in the SL-HDR stream allows optimal use of the receiving device&#8217;s dynamic range by adjusting the HDR quality to its capability. This avoids overexposure with limited dynamic range capabilities while maximizing the capabilities of TVs that support high dynamic range.<br /><br />&#8220;Advanced HDR by Technicolor can deliver an extremely high-quality, high-dynamic-<wbr />range image in HD without compromising content creators&#8217; intent or viewers&#8217; experiences. Dynamic conversions accomplish this outcome in a stable manner—at scale—while minimizing the factors that typically add cost and complexity to the creation, storage and distribution process,&#8221; he says.<br /><br />The value proposition for streaming providers includes reduced storage requirements – by using 8-bit instead of 10-bit as well as storage of SDR and HDR in a single stream – and improved stability for lower bandwidth connections. By utilizing HDR to enhance HD video, streaming providers can save significant bandwidth compared to 4K HDR video while still delivering the same brilliant quality for the vast majority of video content.<br /><br />&#8220;The bottom line is that HDR on HD is ideal for meeting the requirements of service providers that seek a bandwidth-efficient streaming solution for delivering significantly more vibrant video content. 									<p>HDR can significantly enhance full HD content, not just UHD 4K, providing a better viewing experience on HD TVs. This approach improves color, contrast, and overall image quality, making it a valuable proposition for streaming providers. By utilizing HDR for HD content, providers can achieve bandwidth savings while delivering brilliant video content, expanding the possibilities for high-quality visuals accessible to a broader audience.</p><p> </p><p>We caught up with Rick Dumont, Head of Business Development for Wireless and HDR at Philips to learn more. Here is what he had to say:</p><p> </p><p><strong>Q: Streaming service providers account for a growing share of how people worldwide enjoy their entertainment experiences. As this market evolves, what are the major challenges streaming providers face?</strong></p><p> </p><p><strong>Rick Dumont:</strong> Streaming service providers have indeed been experiencing rapid growth in recent years, driven by several factors, including increasing internet connectivity, advancements in technology, changing consumer preferences, and the proliferation of mobile devices. But they do face some challenges that must be addressed head-on.</p><p> </p><p>For instance, streaming providers must ensure that their content can be delivered smoothly and with limited buffering, even in areas with limited internet bandwidth. They need to maintain a high-quality viewing experience for their users, including consistent video and audio quality, regardless of the device or network connection. Similarly, streaming providers need to efficiently deliver their content to a wide range of devices and platforms, including smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles.</p><p> </p><p>And while the category is growing, the market is extremely crowded and competitive. Numerous providers are vying for users&#8217; attention. Streaming providers need to differentiate themselves and offer unique content or features to attract and retain subscribers by continually improving the user experience, including better and consistent video quality, faster load times, intuitive interfaces and seamless integration with other devices and services.</p><p> </p><p>The team behind Advanced HDR by Technicolor—which includes Philips, InterDigital and Technicolor—strongly believes that intelligent adoption of high-dynamic range (HDR) strategies for content creation, distribution and delivery can address many of these issues.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Q: Why is it important to understand that HDR can enhance full HD and not just UHD 4K?</strong></p><p> </p><p><strong>Dumont:</strong> It is essential because the market does not understand that HDR—especially Advanced HDR by Technicolor—allows for a better viewing experience on HD TVs. This is significant because, globally, the lion&#8217;s share of available content is still in HD (2K) and not UHD (4K).</p><p> </p><p>Many people assume that HDR is married with 4K content, but that is not the case. By implementing HDR technology on full HD content, viewers can enjoy improved color, contrast, and overall image quality. They can have a more immersive and visually appealing experience. In fact, HDR over HD has a more significant visual impact than SDR over UHD because HDR presents more accurate colors, smoother light and color shading, and more detailed images. Indeed, utilizing HDR over HD content reduces bandwidth requirements by a factor of four simply because HD uses only one-fourth of the pixels.</p><p> </p><p>This leaves us with the challenge of providing high-quality HDR with 8-bit coding when, theoretically, a 10-bit color depth is needed. However, this issue can be effectively addressed.</p><p> </p><p>The bottom line is that HDR on HD is ideal for meeting the requirements of broadcasters and service providers that seek a bandwidth-efficient streaming or broadcasting solution for delivering significantly more vibrant video content.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Q: Can you be more specific about the differences in the data and processing effort required for delivering HD versus UHD content?</strong></p><p> </p><p><strong>Dumont:</strong> HDR uses 10-bit bit depth to prevent coding artifacts like “banding”. However, with SL-HDR preprocessing as in Advanced HDR by Technicolor, the dynamic or adaptive nature allows coding to be used more efficiently compared to the static coding allocation of formats like HDR10 and HLG. Hence where HDR10 needs a 10-bit bit-depth and typically HEVC coding, SL-HDR can use AVC in 8-bit as used by legacy systems, making it less bandwidth hungry and at the same time backward compatible with legacy SDR systems.</p><p> </p><p>So, from a content creation perspective, HDR over UHD content creation means more data is processed during editing, color grading, and special effects rendering. This requires more powerful hardware and storage solutions to efficiently handle the increased data volume.</p><p> </p><p>In contrast, HDR over HD content involves smaller file sizes and less demanding processing requirements. The single-layer HDR (SL-HDR) pre-processing done by Advanced HDR by Technicolor optimizes 8-bit quantization, leaving no visible coding artifacts like banding. In addition, the HDR and SDR formats can be stored and distributed in a single stream, halving storage space for the coding ladders.</p><p> </p><p>The metadata transmission in the SL-HDR stream allows optimal use of the TV&#8217;s dynamic range by adjusting the HDR quality to the TV&#8217;s capability. This avoids overexposure on TVs with limited dynamic range capabilities while maximizing the capabilities of TVs that support high dynamic range.</p><p> </p><p>Advanced HDR by Technicolor can deliver an extremely high-quality, high-dynamic-range image in HD without compromising content creators&#8217; intent or viewers&#8217; experiences. Dynamic conversions accomplish this outcome in a stable manner—at scale—while minimizing the factors that typically add cost and complexity to the creation, storage and distribution process.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Q: Why is dynamic HDR content conversion necessary to provide a stable viewing experience?</strong></p><p> </p><p><strong>Dumont:</strong> Most TVs in viewers’ homes today are only SDR capable, even though most newly sold TVs support HDR already. The transition period to have all TVs in homes support HDR will take another 5 to 10 years in the USA. Therefore simultaneous support of SDR and HDR for video streaming and broadcast will remain imperative for quite some time. Unlike static (LUT) conversion from HDR to SDR. dynamic conversions allow native HDR video to remain uncompromised and be distributed at the best possible quality, while also making sure that the SDR video is of optimal quality and remains consistent.</p><p> </p><p>Dynamic conversions are also critical when capturing content, especially for live outdoor sporting events. Without dynamic conversion, the brightness levels of the HDR content would need to be manually adjusted continuously as lighting conditions can dramatically change when the action moves from a bright sunlight to shaded area. Consider a soccer ball or a golf ball (or any ball), or a race car moving from bright sunlight to a shaded place of a stadium or a place with trees; or the camera position moving from facing towards the sun to facing away from the sun. Without a dynamic conversion from HDR to SDR this results in compromised viewing experiences for consumers with HDR TVs and suboptimal viewing experiences for those with only SDR-capable TVs.</p><p> </p><p>Hence, by automating the conversion process, HDR content can be delivered to the viewer in a stable and reliable manner, regardless of the viewing conditions or changes in lighting conditions.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Q: How do these features of HDR in general &#8212; and Advanced HDR by Technicolor in particular &#8212; benefit streaming service providers?</strong></p><p> </p><p><strong>Dumont:</strong> The value proposition for streaming providers includes reduced storage requirements and improved stability for lower bandwidth connections. By utilizing HDR to enhance HD video, streaming providers can save significant bandwidth compared to 4K HDR video while still delivering the same brilliant quality for the vast majority of video content.</p><p> </p><p>Instead of transmitting content at over 20 megabits per second, they can achieve the same experience at less than ten megabits per second.</p><p> </p><p>This results in a significant reduction in storage requirements. Additionally, lower bandwidth connections, such as those over Wi-Fi, become more stable and reliable when streaming HDR content at a lower bit rate. The announcement demonstrates how the broadcast and consumer device ecosystems are moving forward in a coordinated fashion to meet consumer demand for high-quality over-the-air (OTA) and over-the-top (OTT) viewing experiences, including the delivery of high-dynamic range (HDR) programming.<br /><br /><br />Hisense&#8217;s NEXTGEN TVs are in development as Sinclair Broadcasting Group continues its aggressive rollout of ATSC 3.0 stations across the U.S. over the course of 2022. Consumers that tune in to Sinclair stations on Hisense TVs will be able to enjoy broadcasts of sports, local news and other live events transmitted in HDR.<br /><br /><br />&#8220;This is an exciting step. 2022 is shaping up to be a very big year for NextGen TV as the adoption of Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) version 3.0 and rapidly maturing video technologies like high dynamic range (HDR) gather momentum. The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) recently increased their estimate of televisions sold with ATSC 3.0 capability in 2021 from 800,000 to more than 2 million units. That is a huge increase. It indicates that there is now a ready market for consumers to receive the advanced services included in the standard.
<br>
<br>
The ATSC 3.0 Standard defines the official specifications and criteria necessary for effective implementation and interoperability of Advanced Terrestrial Broadcast Systems. Since its announcement at the 2018 CES, it has taken the broadcast and consumer electronics sectors by storm despite a global pandemic. It continues to change the way the world experiences entertainment and broadcast.
<br>
<br>
“ATSC 3.0 can deliver more pixels at higher quality for ultra high definition (UHD), 4K, and HDR screens. This is a significant upgrade for customers with large screens,” says Alan Stein, vice president of technology at InterDigital, in a podcast interview for journalists.
<br>
<br>
In addition, ATSC 3.0 offers personalization, interactivity, and broadcaster applications, while also supporting mobile delivery. The latter is a hot topic among ATSC members working to address the possibility of cell phones receiving ATSC 3.0 signals. It is an ATSC application being actively explored in countries like India—where infrastructure limitations have triggered interest in creative ways of delivering high-quality video to consumers in a scalable, cost-effective manner. It also illustrates the international appeal of the standard. The most significant developments, however, are currently taking place in the United States.

<br>
<strong>ATSC 3.0 and HDR Have Captured the Market’s Attention</strong>
<br>
<br>
“About 40% of the US public today is served by a minimum of one ATSC 3.0 signal and related services. By the end of 2021, we expect that number to top 50%,” says Mark Aitken, senior vice president of technology for Sinclair Broadcast Group and president of ONE media.
<br>
<br>
“HDR is one of the features that most visibly improves the consumption of over-the-air (OTA) and over-the-top (OTT) content. It greatly enhances the viewing experience, especially for things like live sports,” says Stein.
<br>
<br>
Sony recently revealed that all their television products for the second half of 2021 would be ATSC 3.0 enabled, supporting next-generation features, including HDR, UVoice, and a variety of other capabilities that enhance the viewing experience for the American public.
<br>
<br>
“Companies like Sony—and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon—are utilizing HDR to enhance viewer experience for as much of the market as possible. The broadcast industry is responding rapidly. For those that embrace HDR early, it is a clear way to establish differentiation, which is critical with fierce competition,” explains Aitken.
<br>
<br>
Broadcast, he added, remains one of the most ubiquitously available technologies in the market, which is why it has been so essential to develop standards that can evolve to deliver experiences that consumers across the nation expect and increase demand. It ensures that the needs of all segments of the market are met—even as we move forward as quickly as possible to keep up with improvements in technology.

<br>
<strong>Blurring the Lines Between OTT and OTA</strong>
<br>
<br>
ATSC 3.0 is providing an opportunity for over-the-air broadcasters to play in the digital space and become online content providers. HDR is thriving in the OTT arena, and broadcasters are quickly gaining ground with ATSC 3.0 and Advanced HDR by Technicolor.
<br>
<br>
“One area in which broadcasters consistently enjoy a competitive advantage over OTT providers is in the delivery of live sports programming. It is also a category of content that takes full advantage of HDR technology. HDR was on full display this year during the exceptional U.S. Open tennis championship broadcast over Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Tennis Channel,” says AItken.
<br>
<br>
“The Tennis Channel, which is brought to consumers through the Bally Sports Regional Networks in 23 markets, will be using Advanced HDR by Technicolor for both our streaming and over-the-air broadcast services in 2022,” he adds.
<br>
<br>
The U.S. Open showcased how ATSC 3.0 and Advanced HDR, by Technicolor are dramatically narrowing the competitive gap between over-the-air and streaming service providers. Moreover, the integration of emerging technologies enabled by the new internet protocol (IP) friendly standard provides an important bridge for broadcasters to move into the rapidly evolving streaming market.

<br>
“It is an important milestone. We&#8217;re now seeing broadcast apps that embrace and extend the best ideas from OTT services while still having the scale and channel change speed that consumers like about traditional television. This allows broadcasters to play to their strengths, highlighting the absence of latency and unreliability that you sometimes get with some streaming applications and devices,” says Stein.

<br>
<strong>Advanced HDR by Technicolor’s Impact on Broadcast</strong>
<br>
<br>
According to Stein, Advanced HDR by Technicolor is the only industry solution that enables a standard dynamic range (SDR)—a non-HDR signal—and an HDR signal to be simultaneously delivered in one bitstream. It is an economically efficient and technically effective solution because it sidesteps the need for broadcasters to use two channels to bring both HDR and SDR services to consumers. This backward compatibility is critical because of the widespread presence of legacy SDR televisions and set-top boxes that remain in the market today.

<br>
From a production perspective, Advanced HDR by Technicolor also supports the ability for broadcasters to use HDR cameras—which bring higher quality into live production—and integrate those inputs with SDR cameras into a single distribution workflow in a way that automatically adjusts to the capabilities of the receiving device, regardless of whether they are HDR or SDR capable.

<br>
“If you&#8217;ve got a television set that was manufactured in the last three years, and it&#8217;s 4K HDR-capable, you can connect your gateway or set-top box, and you&#8217;ve got glorious eye-popping HDR television. It also maximizes the experience of SDR-only devices. Either way, we want people to see the difference,” concludes Aitken.

									<strong>Dec. 16, 2021</strong>—Broadcasters and TV Channel executives worldwide have been exploring ways to manage the complex issues associated with delivering high-dynamic-range (HDR) experiences across the wide variety of content they present to their viewers. While the rapid evolution of HDR has created opportunities to significantly improve the quality of experience provided to consumers, the industry must determine an effective way to absorb these new technologies and innovations as they become available without completely disrupting operations.
<br>
<br>
“Over the past few years, we have seen the emergence of new delivery formats—like ultra-high-definition (4K/UHD) and HDR—which provide better audio and video to viewers,” explains Guillaume Arthuis, founder and chief executive officer at BBright.
<br>
<br>
Integrating these new technologies, however, has not been without challenges. Specifically, the industry wants to ensure that a market is in place for the new enhanced formats while making sure that new services do not lead to an explosion of operational complexity that elevates costs and threatens profitability.
<br>
<br>
“New innovations are constantly introduced, so offering options and flexibility in how the industry can accept and manage content at both input and delivery is essential. Broadcasters and TV channels want to make sure that they are addressing today’s opportunities and looking ahead to ensure that they can cover the next ten years of requirements in terms of formats,” says Guy Ducos at Advanced HDR by Technicolor.

<br>
Harmonizing different types of input content and then converting it into the selected output format —which may be HDR today, but tomorrow may be another format—will be a key differentiator. In addition, all of this must be done in a high-quality manner in real-time.
<br>
<br>
<strong>Broadcast Community’s Understanding and Ability to Manage Complexity</strong>
<br>
<br>
The complexity associated with managing multiple generations of technology is not a new concept for the broadcast community.
<br>
<br>
“Ten years ago, we saw the migration from standard to high definition. What is important to keep in mind is that, for many years, broadcasters had to produce, manage, maintain and deliver two versions of their delivery signals—SD and HD. This was both complicated and expensive,” says Arthuis.
<br>
<br>
The migration to HDR threatens to create a similar level of complexity. For HDR deployment, a broadcaster needs to ensure that they have two versions of the content—SDR and HDR, or UHD alternative for high-quality delivery. In addition, they also need to be able to provide HD in SDR. This can lead to the need to maintain different variations of their signal that are supported by independent workflows.
<br>
<br>
<strong>Advanced HDR by Technicolor Streamlines Support of SDR and HDR Delivery</strong>
<br>
<br>
Advanced HDR by Technicolor, known as SL-HDR 1 in the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standards community, enables broadcasters and TV channels to distribute video over a single stream in both SDR BT.709 content and HDR-BT.2020 content. This streamlines the process.
<br>
<br>
A broadcaster using Advanced HDR by Technicolor can distribute the SL-HDR 1 standard with an SDR BT.709 base signal and allow everyone with a legacy TV or screen to enjoy high-quality SDR BT.709 images.
<br>
<br>
“Metadata in the same stream makes it possible to deliver HDR-BT.2020. If the receiving device is certified with Advanced HDR by Technicolor, the content is automatically upconverted and optimized for the device’s capabilities so that viewers receive the highest quality experience possible. This means that broadcasters do not need to allocate additional frequencies and resources to support the delivery of both SDR and HDR formats,” says Ducos.

<br>
In addition, artificial intelligence and machine learning have a prominent role in managing the complexity of supporting legacy content and the diversity of devices.
<br>
<br>
Unlike SD-to-HD conversions, SDR-to-HDR is not just about managing different numbers of pixels but also a matter of aesthetic choices. AI is necessary for dynamically analyzing each individual frame of the SDR (or HDR) input content to generate (or derive) the best possible HDR (or SDR) quality that can be achieved by optimizing the video—on a frame-by-frame basis. This function is performed while respecting the content producer&#8217;s aesthetic intent.

<br>
“Advanced HDR by Technicolor also allows video engineers and colorists to tune the solution upfront, at the production level, to match their aesthetic preferences precisely. Once that engineer or colorist has decided their aesthetic preferences, AI can then follow those aesthetic choices and deliver native HDR—and the best possible derived SDR—and broadcast it to viewers in a single stream,” points out Ducos.

<strong>BBright Solutions Utilize Backwards Compatibility to Enhance Broadcasting and TV Channel Management</strong>

<b>FREMONT, Calif. &#8211; April 23, 2017</b><b><i>—</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Ultra HD Forum, the global organization defining industry best practices for the introduction of technologies to facilitate the ultra-high-definition (UHD) viewing experiences, will bring more than a dozen demonstrations to booth N1131FP during the NAB Show.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Deployable Phase A technologies that represent current challenges will be demonstrated at three stations in the booth: Broadcaster HDR Video delivery, SDR and HDR mixing, and delivering Quality HDR Video.</span>
<br>
<br>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">Upcoming opportunities to improve consumer experience will be demonstrated with new Phase B technologies and will also be organized into three stations: Dynamic HDR Metadata, HDR and SDR Improvements, and High Frame Rate Video.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The member companies that have collaborated to assemble these live demonstrations are BBright, Beamr, DirecTV, Dolby, Harmonic, Huawei, LG Electronics, NeuLion, PBS, Sigma Designs, Sony, and Technicolor.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;The 2017 NAB Show sees the Forum&#8217;s most ambitious initiative to date of demonstrating UHD capabilities in public. It&#8217;s been an exciting challenge to work with our active members to get so many demonstrations up and running for NAB,&#8221; said Harmonic&#8217;s Thierry Fautier, the Forum&#8217;s newly re-elected President. &#8220;The Phase A demonstrations show what is really operationally ready today, while our phase B demonstrations show what UHD still has in store.&#8221;</span>

Groupe M6, one of the key broadcasters for the UEFA Football Championship in France, offered all retransmitted games on a dedicated UHD SDR channel on top of the traditional HD SDR terrestrial broadcast. This additional UHD transmission presented a technical challenge for M6 who received a UHD HLG signal which needed to be delivered in a UHD SDR format. Working with Cobalt&#8217;s French reseller, OBV.TV, M6 configured, tested, and implemented a workflow using the Cobalt 9904-UDX-4K card with AI embedded Advanced HDR by Technicolor solutions to analyze each image for optimal conversion. The flawless performance was achieved using the default settings on the Cobalt 9904-UDX-4K card which also allowed for effortless deployment.
